February 28, 2016, Sunday
KUCHING: The majority of  folk here had a rude shock yesterday when flash floods inundated many parts of the state capital following the downpour from the wee hours until around 10am.

The Internet was abuzz with shocking images of vehicles stranded in flood waters in various parts of the city, homes in Kampung Tabuan Dayak filled with water up to waist level, as well as staff and patients wading through corridors on the ground floor of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

State Health director Datu Dr Zulkifkli Jantan said no major damage was reported and assured that services at the hospital were not affected.

In a posting on Facebook, Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Hisham Abdullah commended the efforts of SGH staff who helped  relocate patients to the upper floors.

“In times like this, I hope all of our staff would persevere and do their best,” he said.

“Undoubtedly natural occurrences such as floods will, to some extent, be a test of our resilience and dedication and our own state of preparedness.”

Reminding the hospital staff to ensure both the safety of patients and themselves, Dr Hisham called on SGH to secure all medical records and support equipment to ensure that treatment and patient care would not be interrupted.

“I would like to express the Ministry of Health’s gratitude to all of you who have to performed your duties under these trying circumstances. We pray for your safety and may these challenges spur you to higher levels of dedication to public service,” he said, adding that in the past, the hospital staff had faced and overcome such challenges well.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) state deputy director (operations) Farhan Sufyan said in a statement that Kuching had experienced heavy rain from 3am and the department had received 17 distress calls due to flash floods including a landslide at Mile 18 Jalan Serian-Tebedu.

Farhan said among the rescue operations carried out included towing a car caught by rising waters at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg in front of SMB St Joseph.

He said Bomba had mobilised personnel to assist at SGH as well as to evacuate flood victims from Kampung Tabuan Dayak to a temporary relief centre at SMK Tabuan Jaya.

Bomba also received reports of water levels rising to at least one foot in the surrounding areas of Batu Lintang, Satok, Padang Merdeka and Taman Malihah, he said.

“Water levels were also reported to be rising in Kampung Segong, Bau. However, no evacuation of flood victims was required,” he said.

He said despite water levels receding in Sungai Sarawak from 11am, Bomba would continue to monitor the situation here as well as at rivers in Serian and Kota Samarahan.

As at noon yesterday, impassable roads due to the flood were Jalan Wan Alwi, Jalan Tabuan Dayak, Jalan Green, Jalan Arang, Jalan Taman Malihah, Jalan Bintawa (towards Jalan Pending), Jalan Batu Lintang, Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Jalan Palm, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, Sesco roundabout, Jalan Belian, Jalan Nanas, Jalan Badruddin, Jalan Agung, Jalan McDougall and the Kampung Tupong area in Petra Jaya.

Menurut Penolong Pengarah Operasi Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM) Sarawak Farhan Suffyan Borhan, pihaknya menerima 17 panggilan kecemasan berkenaan banjir sehingga jam 10.30 pagi semalam.

KUCHING: The number of people staying at the relief centres in the district of Serian, Sarawak has decreased to 67 comprising 16 families, compared to 80 comprising 19 families this morning (March 1).

Civil Defence Department state public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim said 21 flood victims are currently sheltered at Balairaya Slabi, Entungkuh compared to 34 earlier.

She said 36 others are staying at Surau Darul Hadhari, Kampung Rimba Padi. The 10 people from two families who were evacuated from their homes following a landslide in their area are still staying at Balairaya Koran.

According to her, the prevailing cloudy weather with intermittent rain in most areas in the Kuching and Serian divisions had not helped to alleviate the flood situation. – Bernama

SARATOK: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem yesterday hailed Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the best prime minister, as far as Sarawak is concerned.

Speaking at the Saratok-leg of the ‘Sejiwa Senada’ programme here, which was launched by Najib at Dataran Saratok, Adenan said Najib had placed the people of Sarawak very close to his heart.

He added that ever since becoming the nation’s top executive, Najib had made more visits to the state than any of his predecessors.

Each time he came, he would bring good news, such as allocating funds for infrastructure projects, particularly in the rural areas, he said.

“Sarawak needs a caring leader like Najib to help it catch up with Peninsular Malaysian in terms of development.

“We in Sarawak want what our brothers and sisters in Peninsular Malaysia have.

When they have North-South Highway, we want the Pan Borneo Highway because we also sing the same National Anthem NegaraKu.”

Judging from the treatment accorded by Najib thus far, Adenan said he believed Sarawakians could look forward to getting more good news from him.

“We can count on Najib, who has a good relationship with the state government, to get positive responses to our demands.

“So, it is pertinent for us to give Najib our support and to give him a chance to deliver more good news to us in years to come.”

In that respect, Adenan urged members of all BN component parties to put BN above self to ensure a resounding victory for the ruling coalition in the coming state election.

“We need to compromise on certain matters; otherwise, we cannot work as a team to serve the people.”

Among those present were Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, Deputy Chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, State Legislative Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nasar, Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah, Women, Family and community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Karim and State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
