He believes he can Fly, but can Hung Sing?
'American Idol' reject may lack classic voice but his daring is inspirational.
Secretly, all of us long to be great singers. The number of showerheads that have been abused over the years in this quixotic pursuit is staggering. Alas, truth be told, only a rare few are blessed with the gift, and rarer still are the ones whose expertise is recognized and appreciated by an adoring public. The short list includes such illustrious names as Enrico Caruso, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Marilyn Horne, Luciano Pavarotti, William Hung.
William Hung?
I think it抯 safe to say that while William抯 15 minutes of fame are due to run out shortly, his music will live on forever. I抦 no expert in the field by any means, but I抳e been a music aficionado since I was a tyke, and I know a memorable set of pipes when I hear them. To me, William has a unique sound, sort of a blend of a young Bobby Darin mixed with the grinding of truck gears. No, that抯 not it exactly. More like a cat in heat eating a lounge lizard.
But it is foolhardy for someone like me to try and define someone like him. Every generation produces seminal artists who defy categorization. William is one of a kind. He抎 better be.
Still, when a William Hung comes along, invariably there are legions of music critics who will chime in, feeling the need to offer their own assessments for posterity in a self-serving attempt to hitch a ride on his star. Rather than allow these leeches to sully William抯 career with their rank pontifications, I decided to seek the opinion of a real working professional.

WB Seeks to Reward Bad Singers with Big Prizes
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It's not over till the fat lady sings -- badly.
The WB television network believes that if a bad singer like "American Idol's" William Hung can become a pop culture sensation then it might have an entire TV series on its hands.
The broadcaster said on Thursday it will launch "The WB's Superstar USA," an already taped reality series in which the contestants were unaware of the true nature of the show -- that the judges are looking for "singers" who do not really sing that well.
The show, which the network calls "an off-key version of the red hot performance reality genre," will air over seven episodes beginning May 17.
Auditions were held in Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Orlando and Philadelphia, with good singers sent off as not being "right for the show." A group of 12 finalists wound up vying for a talent and recording deal worth $100,000.
"Superstar USA" was produced by Mike Fleiss, the TV executive behind shows like "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire" and "The Bachelor."
Hung, an engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley, rose to fame for a performance on the blockbuster talent series "American Idol," displaying courage and enthusiasm, if not actual singing ability.
He was later signed to a record deal by independent label Koch Records, and his album, "Inspiration," sold more than 37,000 copies in its first week.
