In the Sydney District Court on 25 July 2008, a jury found Father Paul Raymond Evansguilty of multiple sex offences against seven teenage boys in the1980s. Evans, whose date of birth was given as 20 October 1951, hadpleaded not guilty.

The court was told that, between 1977 and 1988, Paul Evans was a dormitory master at Boys' Town Catholic boarding school in Engadine, in Sydney's south. This school catered for troubled teenagers.

The allegations, which had been outlined in preliminary hearings in a magistrate's court, were as follows.

Some of the offences occurred in the dormitory. Evans had acurtained-off cubicle for himself at the end of the dormitory, thecourt was told. Evans was alleged to have given alcohol to some of theteenagers before taking them into his curtained-off cubicle.

Some of the assaults were alleged to have occurred during camping trips.

The magistrate's hearing was told that Evans was charged and acquittedof sexual offences involving two other teenagers in 1988. He latertransferred to parish work in the Broken Bay diocese in Sydney's north,where he was known as "King of the Kids" because of his links withyouth groups, the magistrate was told.

The Sydney District Court jury found Evans guilty of nine counts ofhomosexual intercourse by a teacher, seven counts of indecent assaultand two acts of indecency. He was found not guilty of one homosexualcount and one indecent assault.

Judge Robert Hulme remanded Evans in custody, adjourning sentencing submissions to 19 September  2008.

The crown prosecutor in the District Court case was Priscilla Adey. Thepolice investigation was conducted by Detective Senior Constable MeganMarks.
