With Big seemingly bed-ridden forever, boy band D2B抯 farewell concert ended with fans unwilling to say goodbye.
Fans of still-hospitalised Big D2B earlier this month shared both the happiness and sadness of the final concert by boy band D2B, one of the most famous of Thai boy bands.

Big's father, Udom Kittikornchareon, appeared at the concert on behalf of his much-loved son.
A tragic car accident seven months ago left singer Paranawat "Big" Kittikornchareon in a coma, and away from his fellow members of the boy band D2B _ Woradej "Dan" Danuwong and Kawee "Beam" Tanjararak. Yet he and his friends are still much loved by fans, more than 4,000 of whom showed up last Saturday at Thammasat University for "The Neverending Concert: Tribute to Big", the band's swan song _ as Big, Dan and Beam decided they did not want to continue.
Since the main hall can accommodate only 3,000 concert-goers, about 500 fervent fans who could not get tickets were ushered to the adjacent small hall to view the live concert on a screen projector. Live broadcast from Z radio was also available for fans nationwide.
The farewell night kicked off with the tear-jerking Mai Mee Thur Wan Nan, Mai Mee Chan Wan Nee (Without You Then, Without Me Now) _ the lyrics talked about the band going through thick and thin together. Many in the audience screamed. Others sang along, eyes brimming with tears.
Many songs that were in the past memorably sung by Big followed. Smash hits included Tor Nah Chan (Before Me), Kae Neung Natee (Just One Minute) and Ja Ko Hok Kan Pai Theung Nai (How Long Will You Lie?). Audiences were taken back to the day when D2B was introduced to Thai audiences by RS Promotion in 2001.
Then they sang Ngom Khem Nai Talay, (Finding A Needle in the Ocean), the song that Big once performed during a singing contest.
Many waved paper cranes, the modern Japanese symbol for recovery and well-being. There was a sense that everyone wished to send their goodwill to Big, who is still in hospital.
No matter how much Dan and Beam tried to make this farewell concert a happy event, for many of their fans, it was anything but.
Big was not just a beloved friend of Dan and Beam. Many RS Promotion singers also regarded him as an amiable brother. James Ruangsak joined the team on-stage to perform Takieng Hua Jai (Guiding Light), Big's favourite song _ Big once said he wanted to play James's brother in any series or film because of their looks.
Meanwhile, singer-actor Sonram Dheppitak helped out with Klai (Near) to thank D2B fans on behalf of RS Promotion.
Other guest singers included actress On Lukkana, who co-starred with Big in the drama series Wai Rai Freshy (Freshy Rascals), who sang Yak Pen Kon Nan Nai Jai Thur (I Want to Be One of Yours). Beam's sister, Sarocha Bua Tanjararak, sang a sad song called Jep Plab (Hurt).
The emotional concert got more so when singers Nathan Ohman and Mam-Patcharida sang Tad Tarn (Resisted), to wish Beam well _ he was heading off to Australia the next day to continue his studies.
Beam broke into tears.
The highlight of the night was a breathtaking moment. Dan and Beam performed special songs for their fallen friend. Nai Jeb-Chan Jeb (If You're Hurt, I'm Hurt Too) was written by Dan when Big was hospitalised. Chan Cha Jab Meu Ther Ow Wai (I'll Hold Your Hand) featured lyrics written by Beam, with an arrangement by Dan.
The audience clapped along, then reached out their hands as if trying to reach their beloved Big, whose parents, also in the audience, were emotionally distraught by the sad atmosphere _ part of the proceeds from the concert will go to help them with Big's medical expenses.
The concert ended with beautiful memories.
Dan and Beam said it was unlikely that D2B would ever perform again, and that replacing Big was not an option.
Without Big, they said, it was no longer "D2B". |
