Chong Wei confident of winning world meet this time around
PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 shuttler Lee Chong Wei believes that this year will be the best chance for him to win the World Championships which begin in London from Aug 8-14.
Chong Wei was the top seed in 2009 and last year’s championships but failed to make it past the quarter-finals. He also crashed out in the third round in the 2007 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
Chong Wei’s form throughout this year has been consistently good, winning six out seven tournaments he has participated in while rival China’s Lin Dan has been far from impressive.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei is confident that he will be able put past nightmares behind him for good in this year’s championships.
“The year has been a good year for me. Hopefully I will be able to forget my past experiences at the World Championships and focus fully on the challenge this time around,” he said.
“There is a lot of pressure, including from BAM, for me to win but I’ve learned from my past failures and I will be going all out to win.”
“I’ve also had a better preparation, with six weeks to prepare for it. Together with the training stint in Bath next week, it will really help me a lot,” said Chong Wei.
The national squad will leave for Bath University on July 27 for a centralised training stint before the tournament begins.
On his back injury. Chong Wei said: “I haven’t fully recovered yet. I am still receiving treatment from the National Sports Institute (NSI).
“I first felt the pain before the Indonesian Open last month. It became serious during the tournament. But I did not withdraw because it was the last warm-up tournament before the World Championships.
“I then decided to play in the Kedah Open last week for the sake of the junior players and the fans.
“Currently I am able to do light training without over-exerting myself. I think I will be able to recover in time.”
Meanwhile, Chong Wei signed a two-year deal yesterday with the KDU Education Group to be the brand ambassador for the group.

Chong Wei drawn to meet Lin Dan in final
PETALING JAYA: It is confirmed. World No. 1 men singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and China’s Lin Dan will be in different halves of the draw in the World Championships, which will be held in Wembley from Aug 8-14.
In the latest world rankings released yesterday, Chong Wei and Lin Dan will be seeded first and second respectively. And if both live up to their billings, they will meet in the final at Wembley.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are using the July 21 world rankings to determine the seeding for the players and the much awaited draw will be conducted on Monday in Kuala Lumpur.
This will be the fourth time that Chong Wei will be seeded top in the world meet but unfortunately, he has failed to live up to his world No. 1 tag at the last three occasions in 2006 Madrid, 2009 Hyderabad and 2010 Paris respectively.
Lin Dan was the top seed at the 2007 world meet in Kuala Lumpur.
Two other title contenders – Denmark’s Peter-Gade Christensen and Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia – will be seeded third and fourth respectively.
If Chong Wei meets Lin Dan in the final, it will be their third big match-up of the year between the archrivals.
At the South Korea Open in January, Lin Dan defeated Chong Wei in the final while the Malaysian exacted revenge over the three-time world champion at the All-England final.
In the men’s doubles, Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who reached the finals at last year’s world meet in Paris, will be seeded fourth.
The top three seeds are defending champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark and South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung.
