Manchester United's lengthy and so far fruitless chase of Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diarra could be about to get a boost from an unlikely source. It seems that the French club are interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, and chairman Jean-Michel Aulas met the Brazilian when visiting the Selecao World Cup squad last week. Now he wants to arrange transfer talks with the Gunners, although whether Arsene Wenger would sanction the sale of a midfielder while Cesc Fabregas is still being linked with a move to Real Madrid remains to be seen. Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that Wenger does let him leave, because that would make it much more likely that Diarra would be allowed to move to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Joseba Diaz, who represents Fabregas has admitted that his client does fancy a move to La Liga: "We had meetings before the elections and there would be no problems on our side, but now they have to speak to Arsenal and see what they say," Diaz told Marca. "We have always said we are very thankful to Arsenal. We would never try a dirty trick on Arsenal and whatever has to happen will happen. I don't think Arsenal would want to let the player go for all the gold in the world and we'll have to wait and see now. If the player wants to go to Real Madrid I don't think the negotiations will take very long. The situation is not easy, but in life nothing is impossible." |
