Arsenal held off Tottenham to claim fourth place and Champions League football for next season with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United on the final day of the Premier League campaign.
Laurent Koscielny scored the crucial winner with an acrobatic volley after 52 minutes as Tottenham's 1-0 win over Sunderland thanks to a late strike from Gareth Bale went unrewarded.
Arsenal's win ensured they avoided the disappointment of finishing behind their great rivals for the first time since 1995 and an impressive end to an otherwise difficult campaign means they enter the Champions League at the final qualifying stage next season.
The Gunners have benefited from good fortune twice in recent seasons to keep Spurs at bay - a dodgy lasagne in 2006; a dodgy performance from Marton Fulop last season - but this felt rather more merited as Koscielny proved inspirational at both ends for Arsene Wenger's side.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal) - A huge performance at both ends of the pitch from the Frenchman, as he scored the winner and defended admirably throughout.
