Soompi Drama of the Week: “City Hunter”
by: hotshotlover30 on Jul 29, 2011

After two months of pure excitement, “City Hunter” made its grand exit this week with two tension-filled episodes. Producers made it nearly impossible for fans to guess how the drama will come to a close with various twists and turns until the very end.

In the end, justice was served to all the members of the group of five behind the Wipeout Plan of 1983. They paid the price by losing what they cherished most. Lee Kyung Wan (Lee Hyo Jung) paid for his doings with his life, while Seo Young Hwak (Choi Sang Hoon) rotted in prison. Chun Jae Man (Choi Jung Woo) lost everything he owned - his company and his life. Apparently, nothing else was as important to him, not family nor loyalty, as shown in episode 18 when he tells the City Hunter to kill his right-hand man Suk Do Shik (Sung Chang Hoon) as it would keep his mouth shut forever. Kim Jong Shik (Choi Il Hwa) lost his beloved, upright son Kim Young Joo (Lee Joon Hyuk). Lastly, President Choi Eung Chan (Chun Ho Jin) was impeached and had to face up the truth to his son Lee Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho), aka City Hunter. Blood-thirsty Lee Jin Pyo (Kim Sang Joong), who many at this point believed had no paternal affection  love for his son, sacrificed himself to prove that he truly did care for Yoon Sung and wanted him to live the normal life he so wanted.

However, “City Hunter” was so much more than a simple vengeance drama. It had a complex web of stories - that were dark, thrilling, heart-wrenching, and romantic - that built Lee Yoon Sung into the City Hunter he is today. It also alluded to some of the society’s current issues like half tuition for college students and industrial accidents. “City Hunter” also emphasized the significance of  our basic principles - faith and justice - and the importance of upholding them .

While “City Hunter” was a drama adaptation of the popular Japanese manga by Hojo Tsukasa, it was more of a prequel to the hit series. The drama gave us the necessary closure to this plot, and it was left open-ended enough for the viewers to connect the dots and imagine how City Hunter became to be in the original manga.

Meanwhile, “City Hunter” maintained its lead in viewership ratings until the end with 18.8% and 18.0% (AGB Nielsen) on Wednesday and Thursday. Park Si Hoo’s “The Princess’s Man” recorded 11.7% and 9.8%, while Jung Yong Hwa’s “Heartstrings” recorded 6.5% and 5.0%.

For those of you who have been following the drama, what are your thoughts? Consider this your “open thread” to rant and rave about the drama of the week!

City Hunter PD: Yoon Sung’s Ending and Remarks on Sequel

The ending of City Hunter was ambiguous for many as people wondered if Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho’s Character) had died at the end. Yoon Sung got shot by his father when he took a bullet for the president, and at the very end Yoon Sung is seen driving off into the city.

On July 29th City Hunter’s Jin Hyuk PD stated that, “Lee Min Ho did not die, he also found it humorous that people considered it an ambiguous ending."

He continued, “The ending does have a bit of ambiguousness, however we did not intend that at all, the meaning behind Yoon Sung driving into the city showed ‘City Hunter’s’ strong will against injustice.

*End of Spoiler*

A lot of attention is being focused on whether City Hunter will have a second season because of its open-ended ending. When asked whether there would be a second season, Jin Hyuk PD stated, “Are you considering a second season?” He replied “No, it’s only possible if Lee Min Ho would be willing to.

Lee Min Ho Discusses Thoughts About "City Hunter"
by: melkimx @ soompi on Aug 12, 2011

Lee Min Ho recently granted an interview to 10Asia to discuss his thoughts about the drama "City Hunter," the finale of which aired on July 28.  The interview, which was split into two parts, shared Lee's experiences filming the drama, his thoughts about the relationship between Lee Yoon Sung and Kim Nana, and his own beliefs about acting.

Lee revealed that after filming "Boys Over Flowers," he hoped to branch out from his "pretty boy" image, and that was why he starred in "City Hunter."  "I feel that I was able to show my potential as an actor through 'City Hunter.' I guess you could say that I was able to take a step closer to obtaining the title as a real actor."  Now you can expect to see him in more varied dramas, as Lee says he has since been offered different types of roles than previously.

On acting with Park Min Young, he said, "I'm kind of sad that I wasn't able to treat Kim Nana in a more adult-like and manly manner because of how the show ended for Lee Yoon-sung. I also feel sad that we couldn't prolong our bickering relationship because it might have kept up the tension from before a bit."  But he said that he was still able to do the "lovey-dovey" scenes without much problem.  "Park Min Young and I were able to create those scenes because she was someone I could act comfortably with."

Lee also discussed how he has changed since he became famous. "Before, I was the kind of person who enjoyed meeting strangers. I used to be very cheerful and friendly and tried to get to know a person in a broader sense but a lot of those characteristics faded away after I got a lot of attention from the audience.  I began to avoid people if I felt slightly uncomfortable with them and I was sad with myself because I was struggling to think of things to talk about with a friend who I met after a year. At times, I even wondered whether this was the right way to live. I’m not sure where this loneliness comes from and as much as I put in my efforts to find a solution, I think it'll be difficult to do so if I stay an actor."

We hope Lee Min Ho will find a way to deal with his fame, since he obviously has a lot more coming his way!  Read the rest of the interview here and here!
