Bukit Jugra (Jugra Hill) at Banting, Kuala Langat, Selangor

Bukit Jugra is situated in Banting, Kuala Langat, Selangor. This hill has an elevation of 120 meters above sea level. Although 120 meters may sound short to some, the view at the end is pretty worth the hike—the lighthouse and Langat River that drains into the Straits of Malacca!

As a virgin jungle reserve (Hutan Simpan), Bukit Jugra is full of old and mature trees. For that reason, the entire hike allowed us plenty of chances to admire these old-grown trees, making the hike so much more enjoyable and educational!

Bukit Jugra’s lighthouse is 146 meters above sea level. Built in 1976, this lighthouse functions to guide ships at the sea as it’s facing the Straits of Malacca. If you’re coming to Bukit Jugra for a hike, definitely don’t miss out on the lighthouse! Although it’s another thirty-minute from the supposed peak, it sure is worth the 30-minute walk!

Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Total estimated duration: 2 hours or more.

Getting There

The suggested entry point to start the Bukit Jugra hike would be at Masjid Al-Muttaqin in Permatang Pasir. Most of the cars would park at the side of the road and walk up the hill. As we visited on a late morning on a Saturday (10.44 A.M), we realized that there weren’t as many hikers and cars.

Alternatively, drive up the lighthouse to the place where they’ll have paragliding so you can skip the hike altogether, but why would you do that?!

The Trail To The Lighthouse

How are you supposed to know if you’re on the right track (pun intended)? At the start of the hike, you will notice these huge water pipes.
A tarmac road with huge water pipes on the side

The huge water pipes. Continue along this road and go up from right where my parents are standing.

Then, follow the road (veer towards the right) and go uphill on a tarmac road until you come to a dead-end which is a water treatment plant. On the right, you will see a sign that says “Denai Bukit Jugra” and “Jugra Hill Track”. From there on, you will be circling the water treatment plant until you finally turn right into the jungle—the real deal.

Along the road from the huge pipe and you will come to this tarmac road. Continue up.

You will come to this dead end which is also a water treatment plant, take a right.

And you will see this green sign. Continue up.

Circle around the water treatment plant.

You will eventually come in to this trail.

                                                        Choose Longer Or Shorter Route

Keep walking along the trail and you’ll see a sign at a forked out route. You’re supposed to make a decision here.

Take the left and shorter route (15 minutes) and you’ll find yourself huffing and puffing up a steep and slippery incline to the supposed peak.

We came down from the shorter route, but if you choose this way to go up, this is how steep it will be.

How To Get To The Gigantic Old Tree

On the other hand, take the right and longer route (25-30 minutes) and you will go through gradual incline passing through mature and old-grown trees, with a surprising detour to a gigantic tree (which I think is so worth it!) before finally arriving at the supposed peak.

When you see this forked out path along the longer route, pay attention to your right and you will see a trail leading inside with a humongous tree.

The gigantic mature tree will be obvious from afar.

It’s so huge I can’t even get my arms around its trunk!

At the peak, there will be a bunch of exits. Turn right at the sign to continue to the lighthouse.

On the way to the lighthouse, make a right to the route with green fences on your right. Follow the fences (some crawling skills are needed), walk through a ruined and abandoned air force barracks before coming out to a tarmac road.

Walk along the green fences

And pass by an abandoned air force barracks

You may need to crawl a little

Also, this cute little bridge

The lighthouse will be at the end of the straight and monotonous tarmac road.

Things To Bring And Take Note

As this hike could potentially have you spending 2 hours or more on the trail, it’s best to take note of certain things on the trail.

Use mosquito repellent as there are mosquitoes here (as did every other hike)

Wear good hiking shoes or shoes with a good grip
Use a hiking stick if you have bad knees
Wear sunscreen as there are quite a few exposed areas to the lighthouse
Carry at least 1 L of water
    Sweat towel
    No toilets
Look around you and you will notice many interested mature trees!

Paragliding And Price

If you did decide to go paragliding, do remember to book online in advance. As of 2020, the price for paragliding cost around ≥ RM240.

Feel free to check out Ascendia Paragliding or Prosky Adventure.

Alternatively, you can be a spectator for free! Take note that we arrived at the lighthouse on a Saturday noon, so we can’t be sure if you will be able to catch them in action when you’re there. However, based on online review, it was said that paragliding usually takes place in the morning and afternoon depending on the weather and wind conditions.

In A Nutshell

Bukit Jugra is a virgin jungle reserve in its rawest and most majestic form. A must-visit highlight of the trail is definitely the lighthouse with a bonus of watching others paragliding for free with the Langat River as the most magnificent backdrop!

Hiking in Bukit Jugra isn’t complete without trying the locally famous Beggar’s Chicken (stuffed chicken wrapped in clay and lotus leaves) or dining in Kang Guan Restaurant (pork-free!) for some scrumptious seafood and some pretty dope fruit juices!

Now go get your cameras charged and tie up your shoelaces for an adventure!
