Ferguson: Rooney wants to leave
Tue, 19 Oct 14:55:00 2010

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United and will not sign a new contract.

"We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can't quite understand why he would want to leave," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said Rooney's agent broke off contract talks with chief executive David Gill after the World Cup, and the player confirmed his intention to leave in a subsequent meeting.

"I was in the office on August 14 and David phoned me to say he wasn't signing a contract," Ferguson told MUTV. "He came across to see me and said 'I can't believe this'. I could not believe it. I was dumbfounded.

"Only months before he was saying this was the greatest club in the world and he wanted to stay for life.

"We just don't know what's changed the boy's mind really."

He insisted he had not fallen out with Rooney over a recent ankle injury, but said he was disappointed with the player's insistence he was not injured.

"I knew very well that he was carrying an injury, we sent him for a scan which showed a minor defect, nothing serious but it needed treatment, and he had treatment."

Ferguson said he had no idea why Rooney wanted to leave, but would leave the door open for him to change his mind, "simply because he is such a good player".

"We've done nothing but help him since he's been at this club."

Rooney joined the club from Everton in 2004 as an 18-year-old for £27m, a world record for a player aged under 20.
He helped them to Premier League titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Champions League in 2008.

The manager said Rooney would not play in Wednesday's Champions League match against Bursaspor because of an ankle injury.

A United press officer said that Rooney was stretchered off at the end of training on Tuesday.

Rooney: I'm leaving to win trophies
Wed, 20 Oct 17:41:00 2010

Wayne Rooney has cited Manchester United's lack of ambition as the reason why he wants to leave the club.

Rooney has released a statement in response to Sir Alex Ferguson's comments on Tuesday, with the striker reiterating his desire to leave Old Trafford in pursuit of silverware.

"I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad," Rooney said in the statement.

"I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract."

Rooney admitted he was surprised by the extended revelations provided by Ferguson, and sought to explain his reasons for wanting to depart the club.

The striker said he remains an admirer of the United boss, but is disillusioned by the future direction of the club.

"I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it," he said.

"It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

"I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?

"For me its all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.

"Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18.

"For Manchester United's sake I wish he could go on forever because he's a one off and a genius."

Oliver Holt: Rooney shows ruthless side... and it's hard to argue with him

No one ever thought of Wayne Rooney as a ruthless, hard, gimlet-eyed kid before.

No one thought he would turn his back on a team he said he loved as soon as the going got tough.

No one thought he would bury his allegiance to Manchester United because Manchester City are spending more money.

But after last night, after the statement he released, that idea of Rooney is dead.

The idea of Rooney the devil-may-care street footballer who lives for a kick-about with his mates is dead.

And the idea of Rooney as the throwback player who would stick with a club through thick and thin is dead.

To be fair to Rooney, it is hard to argue with his bleak vision of the future at Old Trafford.

United have been starved of real investment for the past couple of years. Other world-class players are leaving, not arriving.

And the end of this season may also see the retirement of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, ageing superstars upon whom United are still unhealthily reliant.

That was why Rooney’s statement tapped into the darkest fears of United fans as they trudged towards the stadium for the Champions League tie against Bursaspor last night.

It was the final confirmation that United, crippled by their owners’ debt repayments, are a club on the slide.

Their domination is a thing of the past and they are gazing unhappily at a period in the wilderness, a period when they will not be realistic challengers either for the Champions League or the Premier League.

The shame of it, of course, is that that means that United and the grand old man at its helm need Rooney more than ever.

They need him to stick around until the club comes out the other side. They need him to lead the recovery, to be the figurehead that tells them hope is not lost.

And that is why his response yesterday has stunned United and their fans. That is why his statement felt like the final insult.

That was why, as they gathered in the Bishop Blaize pub on the Chester Road in the shadow of the stadium, United fans poured out their despair and their dismay in songs they never believed they could have sung.

“Greedy Wayne Rooney,” they sang over and over again as part of a chorus that made unflattering references to Rooney’s appearance as well.

When a knot of supporters spotted a reporter walking towards the ground, they yelled at him. “Write what you want about him,” they shouted. “He’s a w*nker.”

Whatever the logic of Rooney’s statement, it is hard to see how he can recover his place in the affections of the supporters.

It has all gone too far for that now. It is hard to see, in fact, quite how Rooney can play for the club again.

If he does, it will be awkward and uncomfortable at best. At worst, it will be an incendiary ordeal.

Released just a few hours before an important European game, Rooney’s statement overshadowed the clash with the Turks.

It was a very public loss of faith in his club. It was a slap in the face for the players he wants to leave behind.

This lot aren’t good enough, he was saying, and I want out.

Rooney, it should not be forgotten, has won eight major trophies already at United. And he is only 25.

He has won the Champions League, three Premier League trophies, three League Cups and the World Club championship.

The Rooney we thought we knew might have felt he owed the club and the manager something.

The Rooney who revealed himself last night thinks otherwise.

Sir Alex Ferguson Compares Rooney Situation To 'A Cow In A Field' And Announces Meeting With Chief Executive David Gill On Thursday Morning Will 'Put It To Bed'

Manchester United boss also challenges claims about lack of ambition

By James Daly
Oct 20, 2010 6:43:00 PM

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he will meet chief executive David Gill to put a swift end to the saga surrounding Wayne Rooney's departure, an exit the Scot bizarrely likened to cows in a field.

The bullish striker - who missed his side's 1-0 win over Bursaspor 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night through injury - had earlier admitted his desire to exit Old Trafford in a prepared statement.

But Ferguson was dismissive of Rooney's views, which played on his failure to receive assurances from Gill about the quality of squad that United could expect to have in years to come before committing to a new contract.

"Sometimes you look in a field and you see a cow and you think it's a better cow than the one you've got in your own field," Ferguson told reporters after the game. "It's a fact. Right? And it never really works out that way."

The Scot insisted he had not read the striker’s statement released a little over two hours before kick-off against Bursaspor.

“I haven't read all the statement, first of all I have to say that, I haven't read all the statement,” he said.

"And I say to you, we will consider it all tomorrow, David Gill and I have got a meeting at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, David's spoken to the owners tonight which is important.

"What is really important is for us to put this to bed, and I don't want this to become a saga, right? Fair? I'm manager of a club that's got to go and win a game on Sunday against Stoke City. That's my most important thing. The rest is a bagatelle, believe me.

“As I say the door is open [for Rooney to stay], we are that kind of club, we want to keep good players, particularly when they are as young as that."

Quizzed earlier on Sky Sports about Rooney's assertion that Manchester United failed to match his own ambitions, Ferguson retorted: "Have I won 30 trophies or what? Thank you, good night."
