Rooney 'wants out' of Old Trafford
Mon, 18 Oct 08:00:00 2010
Rumours that Wayne Rooney is ready to leave Manchester United have gathered pace after reports that the striker has told the club he wants to move on.
United's reaction to newspaper suggestions that Rooney could quit the club were swiftly countered yesterday. "To suggest Wayne Rooney will be sold in January is nonsense," said a club spokesman.
But the widespread reports in the press this morning suggest that Red Devils officials have been informed Rooney will not sign a new contract and wants out of the club, which would leave them with little option other than to cash in on their most valuable asset.
There has been plenty of speculation about Sir Alex Ferguson's relationship with his star striker since stories about the 24-year-old's private life first surfaced at the beginning of last month.
Rooney appeared to make a direct challenge to Ferguson's authority on Tuesday after England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro, when he went out of his way to contradict the Scot's claim that he has been suffering from an ankle injury.
Ferguson has so far avoided any meaningful public discussion about Rooney's situation but appeared to deliver his own verdict when he left the forward out of his starting line-up for Saturday's Premier League encounter with West Brom, then brought him on as a substitute with 19 minutes remaining and told him to play on the left wing.
Although it was interpreted as the final straw by some, Rooney's relationship with Ferguson soured some time ago. Talks over a new contract have stalled and there is no intention from the player's side to re-open negotiations.
It will come as a shock to many observers to discover the extent and speed of the breakdown, given it was only last season that Rooney scored 34 goals for his club.
Even though Rooney's form this season has been well below his normal high standards - his only goal, against West Ham in August, came from the penalty spot - he remains a crowd favourite.
United do have the option of sitting tight and hoping for a thaw in relations. However, they are acutely aware Rooney's value will plummet if he does not leave in January and 12 months after that he would be free to sign pre-contract terms with any club on the continent, and leave on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2012.
The Glazer family are unlikely to be keen on that idea, which is why the prospect of Rooney leaving midway through the current campaign has taken hold.
And the United boss is due to address the media on Tuesday, prior to his side's Champions League encounter with Bursaspor at Old Trafford, with questions sure to focus on the reports.

Champions League - Team news: Rooney worries
Tue, 19 Oct 03:24:00 2010
Alex Ferguson will reveal the most eagerly awaited Manchester United team of the season an hour before Wednesday's Champions League match against Bursaspor, and if Wayne Rooney is not in it Old Trafford will be abuzz.
Rooney, who made his spectacular United debut against Turkish opposition with a hat-trick in a 6-2 thrashing of Fenerbahce in 2004, was left out of their previous Champions League match, a 1-0 win in Valencia in September, and the subsequent premier league game against Sunderland.
Ferguson said his key striker was struggling with an ankle injury, but Rooney, after playing 90 minutes for England last Tuesday, insisted there was nothing wrong with him and had no idea why Ferguson said he was injured.
Ferguson left him on the bench for all but the last 20 minutes of Saturday's 2-2 home league draw with West Brom and refused afterwards to discuss his decision.
British media seized on the "rift", claiming that Rooney has refused to sign a contract extension and recalling the surprise exits of former United favourites such as David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam after they got on the wrong side of the Scot.
Ferguson does not like to be second-guessed by anyone, but if he overlooks last season's double player of the year and United continue to struggle, he will be in for one of the roughest rides of his career.
If Rooney wins a return to Ferguson's starting line-up on Wednesday for the Group C match, he will likely play alongside the Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov. If Rooney misses out, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez is favourite to partner Berbatov.
The draw against West Brom, after United had been leading 2-0, was their fifth draw in eight Premier League games this season. They are already five points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
They should get back to winning ways against Bursaspor, move to seven points and into a strong position to advance from Group C.
Ferguson, though, will be wary of another upset against Turkish opposition.
United lost at home to Besiktas last season in their first home European defeat for four years, although by then they had qualified for the knockout stages of the 2009-10 competition.
In 1996, Fenerbahce handed United their first home defeat ever in the Champions League/European Cup.
Bursaspor, however, are not in that class. They have lost their last six European games without scoring and have never scored in their five European away matches. In this campaign they lost 1-0 at Rangers and were thumped 4-0 at home by Valencia.

Rooney could leave United for £5m
Tue, 19 Oct 11:13:00 2010
Wayne Rooney could walk away from Manchester United next summer for just £5 million due to a little-used FIFA ruling.
The Webster ruling allows players to buy out the last year of their contracts for the price of their wages plus a nominal compensation fee, meaning that the England talisman could leave for less than a tenth of his market value.
According to a report in The Independent, Spanish law firm Ruiz Huerta y Crespo - who have been involved in every major Webster ruling case - have confirmed that Rooney would qualify to leave next summer for a bargain price.
Rooney signed his current in November 2006, meaning that he has served more than the minimum three-year 'protected period' during which United could have blocked a deal.
Webster ruling transfers can only take place in the summer, but the revelation that Rooney could walk away for so little is expected to force Manchester United into action - either to sell the player in January or tie him down to a new contract.
And with Rooney having already rejected an offer of £150,000 a week to stay at Old Trafford, the odds on him leaving in the next transfer window appear to be growing by the day.
The Webster ruling is named after former Hearts defender Andy Webster, who set the legal precedent after forcing a move to Stoke in 2006.
