Spurs boss Ramos: Premiership is best
tribalfooball.com - March 11, 2008

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos has hailed the Premiership as the best competition in the world.

He said: "Now I am here, I can see this potential more closely and I would have to say that the English teams are very superior in European football this season.

"Four English teams taking part [in the quarter-finals] will be thrilling. Some years ago Spanish football managed to dominate the final [Valencia-Real Madrid in 2000] and this time I'm convinced that it could be an English duo fighting for the Cup.

"English football has at last been able to show the Continent it is on form and is demonstrating its quality nowadays."

The Blues owner will return to England following his appearance in front of the Thailand Supreme Court later this week, and he hopes his presence will give Sven Goran Eriksson's men a much needed lift.

"This is my commitment to Manchester City," said Shinawatra. "I feel like they are losing too many games in the last three to four months while I am still busy. So now I have to go back and tighten the bolt."

City have won just two of their last twelve Premier League games, to see their chances of a place in the Uefa Cup next season all but vanish as the top-five looks out of their reach.

Man City boss Eriksson set for Thaksin transfer talks
tribalfootball.com - March 12, 2008

Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will hand Thaksin Shinawatra a list of his summer transfer targets when the owner returns on Thursday.

The Swedish coach will get straight down to business with Thaksin, who has pleaded not guilty in Thailand's Supreme Court in one of two corruption cases being brought against him.

The court session came a day before he begins a month-long trip to England to attend to his duties with City - a trip which the court has already sanctioned.

Man City boss Eriksson unimpressed by Thaksin comments
tribalfooball.com - March 15, 2008

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson was unimpressed by comments made by chairman Thaksin Shinawatra last week.

Shinawatra's declaration before leaving Thailand that he has returned to "tighten some bolts" is seen as the first sign of pressure being brought to bear on Eriksson since the Swede took charge.

"When the chairman comes, if he has some magic things ways to concede less goals and score more, then he's more than welcome to tell me or tell the players," said Eriksson.

"He has never tried to interfere, but he is very curious. He wants to know what we're doing. He has a lot of meetings on Monday and one of them I hope will be a long one with me to talk about the future. Every time he is here we meet up and talk. But we've known about this meeting for a long time and he was always coming back for the Spurs game.

"I want to see him. It will be very good to talk to him in person, rather than on the phone. He's been rather busy in Thailand, of course, so I normally speak to his righthand man."

MATCH REPORT: TOTTENHAM 4 CHELSEA 4 Ina game that had just about everything, we eventually had to settle fora point from an entertaining encounter at White Hart Lane.
Having been in front three times on the night, and never behind, it was a disappointing result for Avram Grant's men.
Joe Cole looked to have won it with two second half goals, afterDrogba and Essien had set up a 2-1 lead at half-time, but RobbieKeane's late equaliser snatched a point for the home side.
Jonathan Woodgate, Dimitar Berbatov and Tom Huddlestone had all found the net for Spurs.
We arrived at White Hart Lane knowing that three points would see usdraw level with Arsenal on 67 points, going into Sunday's clash withTottenham's north London rivals at Stamford Bridge.
Just one defeat here since 1987 meant the Blues could be confident, but that was also our most recent visit, last season. With Carling Cupfinal disappointment fresh in the memory, we were expected to be quickout of the blocks.
With a goal on exactly three minutes, that's exactly what we did, with Drogba nodding home a deep cross from, of all people, John Terry.
The captain had been forward for a free-kick, awarded for a foul on Essien.
In the sixth minute the Chelsea bench rose to celebrate a second, but Joe Cole was rightly adjudged to be offside when he followed upDrogba's shot that had been parried by Paul Robinson.
Chelsea looked comfortable, but, having conceded a couple offree-kicks that allowed Jenas to cross into the area, we were punishedwith a goal hopelessly reminiscent of Wembley.
The midfielder crossed, this time from the right flank, and thereagain was Jonathan Woodgate, unmarked to head home, this timealtogether more powerfully. From the replays, it looked as though itwas Drogba who had let his man go.
Moments later there was a prolonged stoppage as Essien was treatedfollowing a tackle with Didier Zokora, but after some medical attentionthe Ghanaian was fine to continue.
It was his midfield partner Claude Makelele who broke next, layingoff for Ricardo Carvalho. The Portuguese found Joe Cole, whose lowcross was begging for the slightest of touches as it skidded across thegoalmouth. It didn't get one.
We didn't need to wait long though, and within a couple of minuteswere back in front, Essien now fully recovered grabbing his first goalsince December as he cleverly flicked the ball over an advancingRobinson, following Joe Cole's through ball.
It was no less than we deserved, but there was always the danger ofSpurs finding another. Jenas found space in the area but shot tamely atCudicini, who shortly afterwards had to be quick out of his goal todeny Lennon.
Two minutes before the break, Lampard tackled Jenas in midfield, presenting Drogba with an opportunity to run at the home defence andshoot. His effort was powerful, but straight at Robinson.
Ashley Cole was given a yellow card for a late tackle on AlanHutton, joining namesake Joe in the book. Robbie Keane became the thirdname in first half stoppage time.
At the break, Juande Ramos opted to replace Jenas with Tom Huddlestone, who slotted in alongside Zokora in central midfield.
It made no difference as Chelsea doubled the lead six minutes intothe second half, Joe Cole scoring his second inside a week, lifting theball over Robinson after he had beaten Chimbonda with ease.
Kalou had contributed with a square pass that found his fellow winger in space.
Spurs pulled another goal back on the hour mark as Berbatov headedhome Huddleston's corner, which had come about after Terry had donewell to cut out Malbranque's low cross.
It was a fine header, but again Chelsea marking was slack. With half an hour to play, such defensive play would need to improve.
Spurs were just as guilty though, as Huddlestone's lazy challengesent Joe Cole to the floor. From the free-kick, Robinson did well topush away Drogba's fierce strike.
Cudicini matched his opposite number soon after, getting down low toblock Keane's shot after Berbatov had played his fellow forward in.
It was end to end stuff, and it wasn't long before there werefurther chances. First of all Chelsea almost replicated our secondgoal, as Joe Cole put Essien through, but this time he saw his shotbounce back out off the post.
Spurs brought on Darren Bent for captain Ledley King, and so Chelseaintroduced Alex to deal with the home side's three-pronged attack.Kalou was the man to make way.
There was more woe for Chelsea to come though, as Huddlestone, whohad just been booked for diving, rifled in a loose ball after Keane hadsent a corner into the danger area. With 15 minutes remaining, it couldgo either way.
Spurs nearly went ahead when Zokora broke and released Lennon, butthe winger's cross was just too far ahead for Bent to connect.
With 11 minutes left, the game turned again, and it was in Chelsea'sfavour, to the great relief of the bench. The scorer again was Joe Coleand the finish was emphatic, right into the top corner after he hadagain evaded Chimbonda's challenge.
Cole was almost immediately substituted, as Michael Ballack came on to plug the midfield gaps.
It looked to be enough, but somehow on 87 minutes, Spurs pegged usback again, Robbie Keane the benefactor of a huge slice of luck afterthe ball fell to him off the back of Ricardo Carvalho.
There was no luck to the finish though, as he expertly curled theball into Cudicini's top left-hand corner. It was simply unstoppable.
Dimitar Berbatov's shot in injury time looked to be equallyimpossible for the Italian to get anything on, but he miraculouslypushed the ball behind for a corner, to save the Blues a point.

Cristiano Ronaldo's audacious backheel flick set Manchester United on their way to a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa that keeps their title bid firmly on track.
Ronaldo turned provider for Carlos Tevez to nod home the second before the break, and Wayne Rooney ended his personal goal drought with two goals after the interval.
The Red Devils now have a six-point lead at the top of the table, although Chelsea could cut that to five with victory over Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Emanuel Villa grabbed a brace for Derby but a 2-2 home draw against Fulham was not enough for the Rams who were finally relegated from the Premier League.
Paul Jewell's side broke the deadlock when Dean Leacock's long-range shot struck the knee of Villa on the edge of the penalty area and fooled goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
Roy Hodgson's side equalised in the 24th minute when Diomansy Kamara headed Simon Davies' cross home from six yards.
The Cottagers then took the lead when Leacock put through his ownnet in the 78th minute but Villa equalised with a glancing header twominutes later.
Derby were unable to find a winner and are relegated to theChampionship after winning promotion through the play-offs last season.
Jlloyd Samuel deflected Cesc Fabregas' shot into his own net in added time as 10-man Arsenal came back from two goals down to win 3-2 against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.
Bolton opened the scoring after Gretar Steinsson delivered a dangerous cross from the right and Matthew Taylor stole in front of his marker to head the ball home from close range.
Gunners midfielder Abou Diaby was then shown a red card for a bad tackle on Iceland international Steinsson in the 31st minute.
Gary Megson's side doubled their advantage two minutes before thebreak when Taylor rounded off a Wanderers counter-attack with a shotfrom the edge of the box that took a deflection and beat the despairingdive of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.
William Gallas pulled one back in the 62nd minute when he turned home a Cesc Fabregas corner from close range.
Arsene Wenger's side equalised from the penalty spot six minutes later after Gary Cahill had brought down Alexander Hleb inside the box.
Robin Van Persie made no mistake and sent Bolton goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi the wrong way with a powerful strike which flew into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Samuel then directed a Hleb cross past Al Habsi from inside the six-yard box in injury time to give Arsenal the points.
Mauro Zarate also scored twice as Birmingham boosted their hopes of beating the drop with a 3-1 home win over Manchester City.
Zarate opened the scoring with a clever lob five minutes before theinterval and doubled his side's advantage in the 54th minute with a lowfinish from 18 yards out.
Franck Queudrue was then shown a straight red card for a foul on Benjani Mwaruwari inside the penalty area.
Elano stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick in the 59th minute and struck the ball past goalkeeper Maik Taylor into the top-right corner.
Alex McLeish's side restored their two-goal advantage in the 75th minute when Gary McSheffrey converted from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Sun Jihai.
