Big blow to Reds
LONDON: Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez insists his team are still in the race for the Premier League title despite sitting 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.
The Reds failed to close the gap on the Gunners as much as they would have liked after a 1-1 draw with Wigan, which saw Liverpool, who endured a goalless draw at Manchester City on Sunday, drop points for the second successive match.
Wednesday抯 result at Anfield, combined with City抯 2-0 win away to Newcastle United, also saw the Manchester club leapfrog Liverpool into fourth place in the table.
Liverpool still have to travel to the top three of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, having picked up just two points from three home games against the leading trio.
Despite his team having failed to win five of their last eight games, Benitez is adamant that Liverpool still have a chance of ending their 18-year wait for the League title, which they last won in 1990.
揑t抯 clear the gap is bigger but I抳e said before that it抯 a long race and you need to keep thinking about one game at a time if you can.
揑f you think about the difference, I think you will play with more pressure, |

Rafa Benitez lines up move for Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay
RAFAEL BENITEZ is contemplating another Spanish raid in the January transfer window as he seeks to bolster Liverpool抯 defensive resources.
The Anfield manager is tracking Racing Santander抯 highly-rated Argentine centre-back Ezequiel Garay.
The 21-year-old, who made his full international debut in August, is being courted by a clutch of Europe抯 leading teams for his performances in La Liga following his move from homeland club Newell抯 Old Boys in 2005. His move to Spain came after Garay had starred alongside former Liverpool defender Gabriel Paletta in the Argentina under-20 team that won the FIFA World Youth Championships that summer.
Now Benitez has earmarked Garay as he seeks to provide further competition at centre-back to Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia. |
