US tycoon completes Villa takeover
Wednesday, September 6, 2006
American tycoon Randy Lerner has assumed full control of Aston Villa after acquiring more than 85 per cent of shares in the club.
In a statement to the Stock Exchange, Lerner's Reform Acquisitions Ltd said their holding had reached 85.50 per cent, up from just under 60 per cent when former chairman Doug Ellis agreed to sell his holding last month.
If Lerner acquires 90 per cent of the listed stock, he can compel remaining shareholders to sell to him and take the club private.
Lerner is the owner of American Football outfit the Cleveland Browns. His bid for Villa, which values the club at $154 million, came shortly after the appointment of Martin O'Neill as manager of the Birmingham club.
The former Celtic boss, who has masterminded Villa's best start to a season in seven years, will now be keen to learn how much money Lerner will make available for new players.
Prior to Tuesday's announcement, Lerner revealed he had been tracking developments at Villa Park for more than three years before launching his bid.
"Aston Villa was a club I had already thought about for a long time as I became more familiar with the Premier League over the last three or four years," Mr Lerner told the BBC.
"I just became more and more focused, the people I was working with in London had advised I continue to stay focused and that it (Villa) may be available, Mr Ellis may be of a mind to sell it and it kind of built on itself.
"It wasn't a lifelong thing. It would be dishonest and disingenuous for me to suggest it was. It seemed like an opportunity to make a little bit of a difference."
Mr Lerner admits his job has been made easier by the the honeymoon start engineered by O'Neill, whose appointment was Mr Ellis's last act as chairman.
"Martin O'Neill is great," Mr Lerner said. "I think he's got the record, the history and the makings for a steady long-term commitment to Villa. That's the plan." |

Match Preview West Ham United v Aston Villa
Match Reporter - Tue Sep 5 2006
West Ham United v Aston Villa
Barclays Premiership
Sunday 10th September 2006
Kick Off 4pm
Live on Sky Sports
The dust is still far from settled after the most incredible day of transfer dealing we could ever imagined. As speculation runs riot on fans forums, the media and no doubt the pubs around Upton Park on Sunday over the amazing signings of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, Sunday will be our first chance we get to get a look at what the fuss is all about and I抦 sure I抦 not the only that can barely wait.
With all the talk of takeovers at the Boleyn, Villa fans are rejoicing at the completion of their own take over. After the recent period of under achievement at the hands of deadly Doug Ellis and almost as many managers as he has had hot dinners, American Randy Lerner has ridden into town to take control.
You don抰 have to go back many weeks to have found the Villa fans in despair. The hapless and hated David O扡eary at the helm of the club, no summer signings and tipped by fans and the bookies to struggle, many could see Villa being sucked into the Championship at the end of the season.
But that has all changed now, O扡eary has gone and been replaced by the highly rated Martin O扤eill and although O扤eill didn抰 have much time before the transfer window closed, the signing of £6.5m Stilian Petrov from O扤eill抯 old club Celtic was one of the bigger deals done. O扤eill wasn抰 so lucky in his other deals, Javier Saviola rejected Villa out of hand and the Irishman failed in trying to tie up a deadline day deal for West Ham target James Milner, when Glen Roeder angered O扤eill by cancelling the deal at the last minute when Villa thought they had their man.
And the O扤eill factor has paid early dividends, standing 3rd in the Premiership with 7 points from their first 3 games, the unbeaten Villa gate crashed Arsenal opening of the impressive Emirates stadium on the open day of the season, taking a point in the 1-1 draw before following up with successive home wins against Reading and Newcastle.
West Ham did the double over Villa last season, the home game early in the season kicking Marlon Harewood抯 season into gear as he smashed a hatrick to claim his first Premiership goals in the 4-0 win live on Sky, Yossi Benayoun with the other.
West Ham抯 record win at the Boleyn was back in 1958/9 when the Irons won 7-2 and Villa抯 biggest win came back in 1995/6 when the Yorke and Milosevic partnership combined to give the Villains a 4-1 victory, Julian Dicks scored our goal.

If it doesn't work out, there's always the catwalk
The trouble with Tevez
All the talk at the moment is of Mascherano and Tevez, and, to be frank, what the hell they think they're doing playing for West Ham.
The Brazil-Argentina game at the Emirates Stadium at least gave us another look at Marlon Harewood's strike partner and I have to say, the fuse looks short to me.
Maybe it's the monobrow or the chunky stature of the lad, but Carlos has something of the angry terrier about him - and I suggest that Premiership defenders'll be working on their best niggles before they face him.
Hammers fans won't care if they get a Paolo di Canio clone (minus the dodgy salutes). What they might mind is seeing their club being used as a kind of third party for some complicated financial deal that'll see these blokes shifted on to the rich and successful come June 2007.
Of course, you chirpy Cockneys'll be telling me that by then the Irons will have qualified for Europe and your foreign legionnaires will be only too keen to stay.
I hope for your sakes the line in your song "our dreams, they fade and die" doesn't come true. |
