BLUES TO ASSESS WALKING WOUNDED
Posted 27/12/07 07:26EmailPrintSave
Chelsea have been left to assess the damage of their 4-4 draw with Aston Villa as they reflect on the latest setback to their fading Barclays Premier League title hopes.
The dismissal of Ashley Cole and Ricardo Carvalho at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day has left manager Avram Grant without virtually his entire first-choice defence.
Cole saw red for blocking a Gabriel Agbonlahor shot on the line but Chelsea are to appeal referee Phil Dowd's decision on the grounds of wrongful dismissal.
There was no dispute over Carvalho's exit, however, with the Portuguese centre-back offering an apology to Agbonlahor after the match for his vicious two-footed lunge.
The suspended duo will miss league matches against Newcastle and Fulham and an FA Cup third-round clash with QPR, joining skipper John Terry on the sidelines.
To make matters worse England midfielder Frank Lampard limped off with a thigh injury and an update on his fitness is expected on Thursday.
Grant said: "We'll wait for a diagnosis on Frank.
"We have a very good medical department and he will be fit as soon as possible."
While Grant refused to condemn Carvalho's horror tackle after the game, the player himself took the unusual step of formally apologising to Agbonlahor.
He said: "It was never my intention to hurt Gabriel Agbonlahor with the tackle.
"I didn't see him after the game to apologise but I asked for a message to be passed on to him."
Carvalho's challenge was just one incident during an afternoon of high drama at Stamford Bridge that ended with Gareth Barry rescuing a point from the spot.
The Villa captain tucked home the penalty awarded for Cole's handball, completing the second of the game's two fightbacks.
Shaun Maloney fired Villa into a deserved lead with a well-taken brace - the second courtesy of a terrible blunder by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
But Zat Knight was shown a red card for clipping Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko took advantage from the spot, firing the first of his two goals.
After dispatching a brilliant second the Ukraine striker set up Alex to put Chelsea 3-2 ahead before Martin Laursen equalised for Villa to set up the grandstand finish.
Ballack plundered a brilliant free-kick - harshly awarded for Laursen's tackle on Joe Cole - before Barry pounced in the 93rd minute.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill was unhappy with Dowd's performance and pointed the finger at Ballack for the incident that led to Knight's exit.
O'Neill said: "Zat Knight's sending-off was a major moment. It wasn't a penalty.
"The Chelsea player went over and there was no contact. That's my view - it wasn't a penalty.
"The free-kick they got with three minutes to go was not a free-kick. It didn't look like it could be possible.
"I've seen it again since but how did I feel at the time that he might just give it? He did.
"The referee was in a position to get that one right because he was on the spot." |

GRANT PLANS WINDOW SHOPPING
Posted 27/12/07 08:58EmailPrintSave
Avram Grant admits that he will have to bring in new players during the January transfer window if Chelsea are to remain in the hunt for the Premier League title.
The Chelsea squad has been hit by injuries to key players recently and Grant's resources are likely to be stretched to the limit over the coming weeks.
Ricardo Carvalho and Ashley Cole both face suspensions after being sent off in the 4-4 draw with Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Frank Lampard could also miss some of the action after hobbling off with a thigh injury, while John Terry and Didier Drogba are among those already sidelined.
Drogba, John Obi Mikel, Michael Essien and Salomon Kalou are all set to travel to the African Cup of Nations in the New Year, and Grant accepts that he will need reinforcements.
The Chelsea manager had been planning to strengthen regardless but acknowledges that the need has now become greater.
"I was hoping to use the transfer window but now, because of the suspensions and injuries, as well as the African Cup, I must think about using it more," Grant said in the Daily Express.
Chelsea are already seven points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester United but Grant is confident they can still compete for top spot.
He said: "It will be tough for us because of the missing players but I will not give up. I accept the challenge." |

ANELKA FOR CHELSKI
Hidden away in The Sun is the claim that Nicolas Anelka is all-but a Chelski player already.
Despite Sven-Goran Eriksson having a bonkers amount of money to spend, the paper says that he cannot compete with Chelski 'in terms of status.'
'The Blues want Anelka to haul them back into the title race and help them win the Champions League. And the Frenchman fancies another crack at the big-time after spells with Arsenal and Real Madrid,' it reports.
'Anelka wants to go to Stamford Bridge - and Chelsea believe they have got him.' |

FRANK LAMPARD will be out for "a few weeks" after tearing a thigh muscle.
The Chelsea midfielder picked up the injury in the Blues' 4-4 thriller with Aston Villa yesterday.
Lampard was taken off after just 26 minutes and went for a scan today.
A club statement said: "Scans have revealed a tear in Frank Lampard's right thigh.
"The tear is not in the same leg that Frank injured earlier this season.
"He will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing within a few weeks."

Chelsea look to Modric as injury list grows
Chelsea's chronic injury list has lengthened further after Frank Lampard was ruled out for up to a month with a torn thigh muscle, an absence which could persuade Avram Grant to seek the Croatia and Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Modric's signature during the January transfer window.
