Saw a clip from LBH's fan-meeting with SSH in it. SSH was featured for about 30 secs or less, saying a few words about LBH. But the nicest thing was that LBH hugged him ...
That's so sweet! |

JSA: Joint Security Area
Oh Kyung Pil - Song Kang Ho
Lee Soo Hyuk - Lee Byung Hun
Nam Sung Shik - Kim Tae Woo
Jung Woo Jin - Shin Ha Kyun
Sophie Jean - Le Young Ae
First of all, sara, I've made a mistake about the scene at the border. It was Sgt. Oh yang ambilkan cap yang terjatuh tu and it was Sgt. Lee yang 'menghalang' photographer daripada terus mengambil gambar di JSA. Nasib baik tengok balik filem ni, bagus juga to refresh my memory but still, this is one SAD movie. Impressive but sad.
Lee Byung Hun as Sgt. Lee Soo Hyuk was excellent in his performance. Berganding pula dengan Song Kang Ho, multiple Best Actor winner and one of the most respected actors in Korea. LBH was believable in the role, maybe sebab dia baru je selesai his military service in 1999 before the shooting of the film. And then, he's always the actor to watch, the one with impressive eyes' expressions. Soo Hyuk kalau kita tengok, dia jenis yang agak 'boastful' atau suka cakap besar tapi hatinya baik, especially pada Private Nam Sung Shik (Kim Tae Woo), his friend sejak kecil. But when he met the 2 North Korean soldiers in the "land-mine incident" (LBH's so funny, actually), Soo Hyuk was really, really impressed dengan Sgt. Oh. Nampak jelas sekali his admiration for this man. Even masa dia diinterview oleh Major Sophie, Soo Hyuk masih quote kata-kata Sgt. Oh.
Suka dengan cara pengambaran or the film's cinematography. It was IMHO very, very nicely done. The continuation was really impressive. Walaupun ada banyak adegan flashback, itu tak termasuk different versions from different individuals yang ditunjukkan tapi kita tak pening dibuatnya. Sebaliknya, everything falls into place perfectly. And we know why it happens the way it is. How the story took off from 'the eyes' of LBH (for instance) dari present time to flashback was really interesting.
For soldiers yang kena berkawal di border, tentulah boring if only there were 2 of them at both sides. Tentulah, mereka rasa nak tahu sangat about the other side, itu yang mendorong Soo Hyuk memberanikan diri 'berkenalan' dengan mereka. Lagipun dia terhutang budi dengan Sgt. Oh. And why not, since they speak the same language and are from the same ancestors. Hanya ideology yang memisahkan kedua negara, IMO. And then, when they became friends, it looked so normal to be together, like long-time friends in different uniforms. They still like the same stuff like women, stories, music, etc. Part they all main batu seremban dengan peluru tu was incredibly funny. Tak sangka pulak, orang Korea pun tahu main 'batu 5'.
Masa pertemuan antara Sgt. Oh & Soo Hyuk after the tragic incident, nampak mereka berdua cuba sedaya-upaya nak merahsiakan 'persahabatan' mereka tetapi Soo Hyuk dah terlalu lama menyimpan rahsia. Even after Private Jung dah mati pun, Sgt. Oh suruh mereka lari atas dasar percaya. It was really an unfortunate incident for all of them. Bila ditunjukkan pula tape Sung Shik cuba bunuh diri tu, Soo Hyuk dah hampir nak mengaku. The pressure was unbearable to him. Sgt. Oh memang tahu taktik ni, itu yang dia "serang" Soo Hyuk, to save them all. Suka part ni, brilliant acting from SKH especially and LBH, too.
The ending scene, from my point of view is because Soo Hyuk tak dapat menerima kenyataan that it was him who shot Private Jung Woo Jin (Shin Ha Kyun). Walaupun Sung Shik yang berkali-kali tembak Jung but it was Soo Hyuk's bullet that killed him. In the intense moment of confrontation bila 'rahsia' mereka terbongkar, masa tulah they were caught between friendship and duty. Soo Hyuk dan Sung Shik tentulah lebih merasa terancam (dan juga panik) when they were outnumbered tapi yang paling penting ialah both of them were on the WRONG SIDE of the border. Masa tulah, perasaan takut mulai menguasai mereka. Yes, 4 of them were friends but at the same time they're also enemies.
Soo Hyuk walaupun dia selalu brag of being the weapon expert and all tapi dia tak pernah menembak sesiapa apalagi membunuh orang lain. Dia memang tak sangka dia yang menyebabkan kematian Private Jung. Deep down inside, he's not going to be able to live with himself knowing the truth. The whole incident was giving him a lot of pressure. Itulah yang membuatkan dia membuat keputusan drastic begitu, the one thing that pushes him to the edge especially bila Major Sophie beritahu maklumat tersebut diperolehi dalam keterangan Sgt. Oh sendiri.
The only flaw atau kelemahan dalam filem ni ialah lakonan Lee Young Ae. As Major Sophie Jean, her spoken English was unfortunately, quite terrible. Sorry, no offence to anyone, kalau ambil Kim Min would be better. As Major Sophie Jean, LYA should at least sound a little bit more convincing in her English. It's funny when she speaks Korean (but of course) punyalah laju berbanding English padahal dia kononnya, baru je belajar bahasa Korea. At least speak English with a Swiss accent, but no, she sounded so unnatural.
All in all, it was and still an excellent film. The first Korean film I ever saw. Semuanya sebab nak tengok LBH after Beautiful Days but in the end the film itself won me over.

JSA revealed
The review-analysis below was written by Shirley. Read it and you will understand this award-winning Korean box-office movie better.
The movie touches on the sensitive issue of North vs South Korea years of separation, but the work he produce do not have any of those commercialize characteristic of "Hollywood" war movies or special
effects like Pearl Harbour, no hidden agenda to make judgement to says who is right or wrong.
He delivers a compelling tale of the friendship between 4 soldiers (2 each from opposing sides) guarding the borderline between the North and South which ended up in tragedy. South Korean soldier Lee Soo Hyuk (LBH) was accidentally saved by Oh and Jung the North Korean soldiers from the land mines. Then it begins their friendship which started by Lee and Oh exchanging letters through stone throwing across the border. Then once Jung wrote something perhaps a dare? and Lee walk right across the boarder to the guard house of the North Korea.
The most memorable scenes are when the soldiers from the South sneak to the other side where they gather to play simple games/exchange things/talk about their girlfriends. They have their tense moment too when they point their guns at each other, but they are also just ordinary people who want to know more about each other.
I also like the scene when Lee was encouraging his counterpart over to cross the borderline and the scene show only their shoes .. it seems like the shoes were doing the acting. The four soldiers are all playing childhood games with their bullets and all, it seems they had found their innocence on the same place where any sparks will ignite a war .
The story was told through the flashback of the soldiers during investigation into the death of 2 North korean solders, the plot is excellent you only know what really happen at the end. The ending finale is also the climax where the soldiers had to make a choice between friendship or betrayal and the truth is reveal. The tragedy happened to be on the day of Jung’s birthday, what an irony when the day of celebration turned into bloodshed within minutes.
The scene when Lee was pointing his gun at the North Korean office who had discovered their gathering, he had felt betrayed by his friends (that they had designed all this) and said with tears in his eyes they are not brothers, they are still enemies. that was the moment that he had choose not to trust his friends anymore. Lee was the one who shot Jung but when he told his story to Lee Young Ae, i think his version was Nam who kill Jung. Perhaps Lee actually believe his own story since he was in shock.
What touch me at the finale scene was how Oh was the only one who still believe firmly in their brotherhood, the best show of his trust was when he hand the gun into Lee hands to shot him so it will make their story more convincing, and after all that had happen, that was the best show of trust anyone could have in another person.
And during the questioning, where Oh attack Lee was to prevent him from speaking the truth as Lee Young Ae had pointed out Oh did not really strangle Lee (he had no marks on him compare to the injuries Lee Young Ae had suffered after Lee had attacked her before). Hence she knew that Oh was deliberately trying to protect Lee and also the photo of Lee girlfriend drawn by Jung also reveal the fact that they know each other.
Once Lee Yong Ae point out the difference between Lee and Oh testimonial, Lee seems to awake from his shock and his denial of what had happened. Lee eventual suicide i think it was from the agony of that his first killing was that of his friend and that it perhaps had all started from him .
The last scene leave a lasting impression on me where an American Tourist had accidentally taken the photo of them, earlier on in the show and the last scene was this photo showing only one of them and when the camera pulled back slowly you see that the four of them (who did not know each other then) were all captured in the photo in their respective posts, it seems that their paths were destined to cross even before they know it.
Lee again proved himself a talented actor but the rest of the cast are equally good. It is a joy watching a talented cast in such a excellent plot. I may not be an expert on Korea history, but the movie touch me as it is not a political movie, it is about human nature, the bond and trust between friends.
The movie really is not about the physical barriers that exist between the North and South but really about the mental barriers among the people from both sides- to trust and accept one another. It was quite sad to see at the end of the show that the opposing soldiers still harbour mistrust of each other and tragedy strike when they hesitate to trust one another (but I cannot blame them as this was strongly drilled into them since young). I only have a brief understanding of the North and South issues from news, but still it really pains one to see that the decision of some people could separate a generation and reconciliation will perhaps take another generation to come and heal. This movie give me an insight into the dilemma though i may not fully understand the feelings of Koreans. |

katt, TQ for the nice pics n detailed reviews of yours n shirley. You had me dumb-founded there. I'm not sure I can do the review as good. ;)
The three of them (except for Song Kang Ho despite him being one of the most respected actors in Korea) are actually familiar faces to me, so it's kind of easy to 'accept' them in their characters n it kind of makes me comfortable. Haha. I don't really know how to say it properly. I'm not even sure of the right words to use. Hope somebody can actually see through the lines n understand what I'm trying to say. Hehe. I watched Kim Tae Woo in Tears In Her Eyes n Shin Ha Kyun from Make It Big movie trailers. LBH? Hehe. Memang dah kenal. ;)
Betul la, mmg JSA membuatkan kita berfikir pasal persahabatan n harga kewujudan sebuah keamanan dlm dunia realiti. Really inspiring. My big bro pointed out that the movie ada similarities dgn cite The Silence of the Lambs lakonan Jodie Foster lama dulu. Dlm mencari kebenaran sst kes, dia akhirnya 'menjumpai diri sendiri. Something to think about, ne? :re:
Agreed dgn katt pasal Lee Young Aae's English. Kim Min would be more convincing. |
