Defoe Goes To Pompey, Benjani Left Hanging
Jermain Defoe has completed his move to Portsmouth in the nick of time. However, Benjani's transfer to Manchester City could not be completed in time, despite earlier reports suggesting all was well.
 
Despite City's best efforts, everything could not be completed on time, and Benjani's move has this fallen through at the very last minute.
Manchester City spokesman Paul Tyrrell said on the official website: "Due to the late arrival of the player in Manchester we were unable to complete the transfer."
It was a comedy of errors really, as first, Benjani was left waiting in Manchester through the evening to find out if he would be moving, and then Defoe was left waiting at night to know if Benjani's move would confirm his.
However, at the very last minute, Pompey decided to go through with their purchase nonetheless, so as to not take any chances.
The repurcussions could be significant, as City are almost certain to blame Portsmouth for the late nod.
Pompey, meanwhile, will face problems balancing their books, as they had to sell Benjani to fund Defoe's move.
The one person who was happy was the former Tottenham striker.
"I can't wait to be honest. I want to get it done and get my boots on. I'm happy," Defoe told Sky Sports News.
"For the rest of the season I want to get as many goals as possible, and most importantly get three points and just do well for Portsmouth."
Harry Redknapp meanwhile was delighted to seal the signing of the same player he bought from Charlton when he was in charge of West Ham in 1999.
