Theo Walcott heading for conflict with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
Theo Walcott has been caught in the middle of a club-versus-country row after he told Arsenal that he wants to play for the England senior and Under-21 teams this summer.
If Walcott gets his way, he would have only six days off before the start of next season and Ars鑞e Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has made it clear to the winger and to the FA that he does not want that to happen. “You should be proud to play for your country,” Walcott said. “I’m happy to play for both teams and put 100 per cent in and that’s what I will do.”
Walcott is in Fabio Capello’s squad for the World Cup qualifying matches against Kazakhstan and Andorra on June 6 and 10 respectively and the 20-year-old will also be in Stuart Pearce’s squad for the European Under-21 Championship in Sweden.
England’s first game of the tournament is against Finland on June 15 and if Pearce’s side reach the final on June 29, Walcott would have less than a week’s holiday before Arsenal players report back for pre-season training on July 6.
“I’ve let it be known to the FA that he should not play in both national teams during the holiday period,” Wenger said. “Capello is understanding and Pearce is less understanding. It is difficult for us to accept, but we cannot do anything about it.”
Walcott missed four months of this season after dislocating a shoulder while on England duty in Germany last November and Wenger wants him to have a proper rest before the start of a crucial season for Arsenal.
Finishing fourth for the third time in four seasons is relatively disappointing for a club as big as Arsenal and Wenger has warned his players that he will make changes this summer. “We are analysing every position in the squad,” he said. “We are analysing the potential of the players we have and also the improvements that they can make for next season.”
As well as signing new faces — a holding midfield player and a commanding centre back are the priorities — Wenger wants to tie down players such as Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner, the strikers, on new long-term deals. “I had two months in the autumn where I played like a Sunday League player,” said Bendtner, who scored 15 times this season. “I tried to work hard and do all the right stuff but it just didn’t seem to go for me.”
Other headaches that Wenger will have to deal with are the futures of Emmanuel Adebayor, William Gallas and Cesc F郻regas. Adebayor almost joined AC Milan last summer and there are many Arsenal supporters who would be happy to see the back of the Togo forward. F郻regas is likely to stay after being made club captain, but the Spain midfield player was brutally honest when he was asked to analyse his performances last season.
“When I look back at the season personally, I must say that it’s been difficult,” he said. “From the start of the campaign I didn’t have the perfect pre-season because I was involved in the European Championships until the final. I know I didn’t play well this year; I feel like I didn’t improve. Next year I will come back stronger and I will do better.” |
