Changing Inter's "philosophy" taking Jose time
March 24, 2009
Jose Mourinho's burning ambition is to lead Inter Milan to Champions League glory, but the Portuguese coach is finding it difficult to put his plan into practice.
Mourinho is closing in on the Serie A title in his first season in charge of the Nerazzurri, but he shares the frustration of fans over the club's continued failures in Europe.
Inter's Champions League challenge this campaign was ended by Manchester United in the last 16, and Mourinho is aware he needs to alter the mentality of his players.
''I want to change the philosophy of the club,'' said Mourinho. ''I have spoken to the president after what happened in Manchester and again last Friday. We will continue to speak until we are moving in the same direction, with the same philosophy.
''This should not be the philosophy of Mourinho, or (Inter president Massimo) Moratti, or (Inter sporting director Marco) Branca but that of Inter.''
One of the challenges Mourinho has faced in Italy is that he could not have the same spending power he enjoyed in the Premier League.
''When I was at Chelsea, there was so much money available for the coach to put his philosophy into action,'' he said. ''At Inter it is more difficult because I need to close a cycle and open another one.''
Mourinho is already planning this summer's pre-season programme.
''I see myself at Inter next year,'' said Mourinho. ''So much so I will travel on Friday to Los Angeles to plan our pre-season for July.''
Inter travel to the Friuli stadium to meet Udinese on April 5 with a seven-point advantage over Juventus with nine games left to play.

Calcio Debate: Has Jose Mourinho Been Good For Serie A?
Ever since his arrival at the San Siro last summer, the controversial former Chelsea boss has been making more enemies than friends by doing things his way. Goal.com抯 Gil Gillespie reflects on a season of conflict with you know who...
Time and patience seem to be running out for the coach formerly known as 'The Special One'.
Following Inter's fourth successive Champions League exit at the last 16 stage, it seems as though everyone in Italy now wants to see the back of Jose Mourinho
The feeling around the peninsula is that he might be able to talk the talk, but he is considerably less successful when it comes to walking the walk.
Everyone is queuing up to have a go at the Portuguese agitator.
Even Inter fans have had enough, bored by Mourinho's mighty mouth and his turgid style of football.

Inter Coach Jose Mourinho has sparked controversy again by attacking his rivals and comparing himself with Robin Hood and Jesus Christ.
The 46-year-old Portuguese made the comments as a guest on Chiambretti Night, a TV show broadcast on Italia 1.

Inter Are One Step Closer To The Scudetto - Mourinho
Although tonight's 1-0 victory against Udinese increased Inter's lead over Juventus to nine points, coach Jose Mourinho doesn't want to celebrate victory just yet.
"The Scudetto is closer now but the last word has not been said yet," he said to Datasport.
"It's not done yet, there are still a lot of points up for grabs, we need at least five more victories. We even managed to extend our lead over the runners-up, although on paper this round seemed more difficult for us.
"Chievo played a great match [against Juventus] and we were lucky enough to win, thanks to an own goal and a possible penalty denied to [Fabio] Quagliarella."
The coach also wanted to praise today's opponents Udinese, who have often managed to get results against Inter in the past.
"They have a lot of good players and they put us in difficulty," he continued. "[Davide] Santon was a bit tired and this time he did not play a great match, while I saw a very good Maxwell, he's a player I like a lot."
These last statements are perhaps a bit surprising, as the Brazilian full- back is rumoured to be on his way out due to a lack of playing time. He recently lost his place in the squad to 18-year-old youth product Davide Santon.
