NYT Features Rain's Upcoming Concert at Madison Square Garden
2006-01-31
"The Korean pop star and actor Rain is looking to make a name for himself in the United
States."
The New York Times, one of the most prestigious newspapers in the United States,
carried a two-page story in its Jan. 29 issue featuring Rain (23, real name: Jung
Ji-hoon), who is preparing for upcoming concerts in New York, as well as on the
hallyu (Korean Wave) boom.
Rain will give solo concerts at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York on
Feb. 2 and 3--a first for an Asian entertainer.
Taking up the entire culture-leisure section and another page, the NYT's story
focused on Rain's popularity in Asia and his being the top hallyu star. The NYT said,
"Last year, Rain sold out arenas across China and Japan, performing to more than
40,000 in Beijing and 20,000 in the Budokan in Tokyo." The newspaper showed
interest in whether he can make a name for himself in the United States as well. The
NYT added, "He wants nothing less than to break down barriers, build cultural bridges
and become the first Asian pop star to succeed in America."
The NYT also praised him, saying, "He is a huge star in the making, but, at the same
time, he is a very indigenous artist and a source of local pride." In a recent phone
interview from Seoul with the NYT, Rain said, "The United States is the dominant
music market. I would really like to see an Asian make it there. I would like that
Asian to be me." To attain this goal, Rain is currently receiving English language
lessons. In the interview, Rain said he was planning to release an album in English
sometime in October after learning the language to a greater extent.
The NYT said that Rain, who has achieved high popularity in China and Japan, is now
targeting the American market. It added, "America is taking a growing interest in
Asian popular culture, from Pokemon to Bollywood."
The American newspaper also introduced a personal story about Rain, who grew up
in poverty. According to the newspaper, Rain's family was living in a one-room
house in Seoul when singer/composer Park Jin-young and Rain first met. By the
time he presented himself for an audition at Park's performing arts academy, Rain
was in a state of desperation and his mother was quite ill. As soon as Park signed
Rain, he asked the impresario to help his mother. But his mother reportedly said,
"Please spend the money set aside for me on my son." She passed away a year
before he debuted. Such a heart-rending background served as the prime
motivation for his growth, said the NYT. In the interview, Park chimed in, "That's
why Rain neither entertains himself nor drinks, but only practices several hours
every day."
The NYT also gave a detailed account of how Asian pop culture is establishing itself in
the United States quickly. According to the newspaper, boys and girls of Asian
descent are emerging as the main consumer group of hallyu products. The Internet
has allowed them to access music and performances from anywhere around the
world. This has attributed to Asian-Americans' enthusiasm about Asian pop stars.
The NYT added, "Most of the 10,000 people coming, however, will need no
introduction." The organizers of the upcoming concerts said, "We estimate that more
than half of those who have bought tickets are Chinese-Americans, and many
Japanese-Americans have also bought tickets."
However, 60 percent of those who watch Asian channels of "ImaginAsian
Entertainment," an Asian TV network in the United States, are not of Asian ethnicity.
At the East 59th Street movie theater in Manhattan, which shows only Asian films, 70
percent of the audience is non-Asian. Thanks to "cultural globalization,"
non-Asian-Americans are discovering the easily-accessible Asian pop culture, too.
This is why Rain's concert schedule was extended by one more day. "We originally
planned to hold only one concert on Feb. 2. But we had to extend it to two due to the
explosive response. Coveted seats were already sold out in just two to three days,"
said an official from the program agency.

Xinhua News Agency Covers Singer Rain's Concert in New York
2006-02-06
"Singer Rain showed New Yorkers that Asians can dance."
Xinhua News Agency, the state-run news service of China, extensively reported on
Feb. 5, "Singer Rain showed New Yorkers that Asians can dance."
Xinhua said, "Singer Rain, a pop star from South Korea, gave his first solo concert
at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, the United States on Feb. 2 and
3, local time. He introduced his own dynamic songs and dances."
The news agency added, "Besides his songs and dances, he showed off the tough
chiseled beauty of his body, taking the audience by storm."
Xinhua gave Rain high acclaim by quoting a statement by the vice president of
MTV. The MTV executive said, "Rain's music is polished, with the characteristics of
Asian traditions but based on the style of American singers such as Michael
Jackson. At this moment, a top Asian star named Rain is surely the pride of
Asians."
Xinhua also said, "Rain will release an album in the United States in October. We
want an Asian singer to succeed in the huge American market. Rain once said, 'I
would like that Asian to be me.'"

Singer Rain to Work with Top American Star Omarion
2006-02-09
Singer Rain, a "star of Asia," has recently knocked on the door of the American
music market with his concert at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New
York. He will likely work with top American star Omarion, who is dubbed "the
second Usher," to produce a joint album and act together in a film.
During Rain's concert in New York on Feb. 3, the second day of the scheduled
performances, Omarion displayed his impressive dancing ability onstage. During
the concert, Rain once again called him onstage, hinting that he was pushing
forward with a secret project with the American star.
Since both of them have singing, dancing and acting abilities, fans, journalists and
those from the entertainment industry who filled the concert hall to capacity that
day, showed extraordinary curiosity about what they were planning.
On Feb. 9, an official from Rain's agency, JYP Entertainment, raised public
expectations about their joint project, saying, "These two young men, who can
dance, sing, and act well, can work together to release a duo album or act
together in a film."
Park Jin-young, Rain's producer, has already finished writing two songs for
Omarion's new album at the latter's request. Some people cite the possibility of
Omarion singing one of these songs in a duet with Rain.
The introduction of Omarion's new songs will reportedly be conducted by P.
Diddy, "the Midas of American hip-hop" who made Rain's first-day concert shine
by his appearance onstage, and Teairra Mari, a rising American R&B star.
Omarion used to be the lead singer of B2K, a popular group of young singers, and
debuted as a solo singer in 2005. His debut album "O" sold more than 1 million
copies, causing him to attract media attention as a "next-generation Usher." He is
a now a hip-hop superstar who has also been recognized as an actor after
starring in the film "You Got Served." He was praised for having displayed his
dancing ability in the film.
An official from JYP Entertainment said, "Rain and Omarion immediately bonded
because of each other's ability and modesty, and promised to be friends. They
are on such friendly terms that they have exchanged their cellphone numbers."
Rain said, "I like Omarion's modesty and warm personality. I hope to work with
him and build a good friendship."

Orders for Rain's Photo Album Likely to Hit 10 Bil. Won in Japan
2006-02-22
Advance orders for singer Rain's photo album entitled "Road for Rain" will likely
reach 10 billion won in Japan.
MN Pictures, the planning and production agency of Rain's photo album, said on
Feb. 22, "We can't reveal the exact amount because of our agreement with the
Japanese sales agency. But we can say the advance orders for Rain's photo
album and DVD set have reached 10 billion won." Such a huge amount of
advance orders is chiefly attributed to the relatively higher prices of the photo
album and the DVD in the Japanese market, as well as Rain's popularity.
The photo album will hit the market in Japan sometime in April or May. Rain toured
Cuba and Los Angeles last year during his free time between his acting and
concerts. The photos were shot by photo artist Cho Sun-hee.
The photo album consists of four different themes ranging from his boyish features
to manly and sexy "tough guy" images. The 45-minute DVD contains footage of
dynamic dances he showed off with American and Cuban dancers, as well as an
interview with him.
"Rain is winning higher popularity in Japan in light of his recent concert at Madison
Square Garden Theater in New York, a first for an Asian singer. As such, many
Japanese agencies are increasingly expressing their wish to secure the photo
album and the DVD," said an official from MN Pictures.

Singer Rain, Actress Lim Soo-jung to Act Together in New Film
2006-03-20
Singer Rain (real name: Chung Ji-hoon), a top hallyu star in Asia, and young
actress Lim Soo-jung have met Park Chan-wook, a world-renowned director of
the Cannes International Film Festival award-winning film "Old Boy," for the first
time. They met to discuss the filming of Park's new film entitled "It's Okay,
Though You're a Cyborg."
The three celebrities read the script of the film for the first time at the film
production agency, Moho Film, on the afternoon of Mar. 18. Their meeting was
arranged after Park made the final decision to star Lim and Rain in the film.
According to an official from the film production agency on Mar. 20, the group felt
somewhat awkward at first, but the ice was broken after they read the script for
about three to four hours and had meals together.
"It's Okay, Though You're a Cyborg," a new HD film, will be directed by Park, the
director of "Old Boy" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance." It portrays a story
about a woman, who believes herself to be a combat cyborg, meeting a man, a
serious case of a social misfit, at a mental hospital.
This will be the first film Rain will act in, although he has made his presence known
as an actor in TV dramas such as "Let's Go to School, Sang-doo!" and "A Love to
Kill." For the new film, Rain will play the lead character using his real name,
Chung Ji-hoon.
Lim, who has yet to finish the final scenes of her new film "Lump Sugar," has been
cast as the lead female character. The shooting of the new film "It's Okay, Though
You're a Cyborg" will begin late this month. Most of the scenes, including those at
the mental hospital, will be filmed in Busan.
