TOFFEES COME TO TOWN ON CRISP AFTERNOON
[quote]
By Gareth Beavis
When Everton manager David Moyes begins each season, what does he hope to achieve? Is there even a glimmer of belief in his heart that maybe one day his team will be challenging for top honours, and teams like Chelsea may look at the fixture calendar and see the game against the Toffees with heavy hearts?

I doubt it. For he, and so many other managers in the Premiership, have three things they could contend for. Relegation, an UEFA cup spot, or more likely, mid-table mediocrity. As a Pompey fan, I have to say I抎 be happy with the latter, but for a team that抯 been top-flight material for so long, you have to wonder what motivates them.

And therefore games like this become all the more important. Portsmouth hosting Everton at Fratton Park once more, and attempting to finally beat Everton at home in the Premiership. You抎 have to go back to 1957 to find the last time this happened in the top league, when Portsmouth came away winners 3-2. Of course, it were different in them days. You could get five pies and a glass o

POMPEY SEEK PACE
By Bill Pierce, PA Sport

Harry Redknapp is ready to open negotiations with Portsmouth owner Alexandre Gaydamak over his transfer plans for January.

The Pompey boss is desperate to add more more attacking pace into his team.

Although he has David Thompson, Matthew Taylor and on-loan Cameroon winger Roudolphe Douala all capable of playing on the flanks, Redknapp has made a new wide player in midfield a priority.

He said: "I will identify a couple of names and take them to the owner, 'Sacha' Gaydamak. And if we can do the deals, we will. But I haven't got any names yet.

"My priority is a wide player with pace who can go past people. We have not got anyone with that kind of penetration. I need another defender - possibly a centre-half or a left-back.

"There a few names of players in France that have been put to me. A front man is a possibility. I'm happy with the four lads I've got if they are all fit. But they are not all fit at the moment."

Senegal midfielder Khalilou Fadiga, released by Bolton, could soon sign for Pompey after training at the club in recent weeks.

But skipper Dejan Stefanovic is out for three months after a knee operation while strikers Andrew Cole (Achilles) and Lomana LuaLua (thigh) are other long-term casualties.

Portsmouth may also be forced to decide in January whether they are going to sign Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes - currently on loan from Benfica - for a club-record £7million.

Redknapp signed nine new players with the help of Gaydamak's considerable financial backing last January.

He has spent just under £5million in fees recruiting David James, Niko Kranjcar, Sol Campbell, Thompson, Glen Johnson and Cole but there has been a massive rise in players' wages at Fratton Park this season.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp:
"It was a fantastic goal from Matty Taylor. He is a great striker of the ball.
"He did it against Aston Villa and it was another great finish from Kanu - a side-foot volley that was really top class.

"We are having a terrific season and this was another good performance. The performance was very solid and the team worked hard as usual."

Everton manager David Moyes:
"We were terrible in the first half. We conceded two very good goals, but I can't come out and say we deserved anything because we didn't.
"We never got to grips with the game and just never got started. We had players out injured, but we still had players out there who we thought would get us a result.

"We missed a real drive and determination. We had a chance to get above Portsmouth and we didn't take it."
