Rooney winning fitness battle - Fergie

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful he will have key duo Wayne Rooney and Edwin van der Sar available for Sunday's mouth-watering FA Cup tie against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Rooney picked up an ankle knock in the win at West Brom last weekend, leaving the pitch before hobbling back on for the closing moments of the 2-1 victory. Meanwhile Van der Sar has missed United's last two matches with Tomasz Kuszczak deputising for the Dutch keeper.

In last season's competition, United were knocked out in the third round by Leeds United and Ferguson, who confirmed Rio Ferdinand is fine after being rested for Tuesday's clash against Stoke, is planning to field a stronger team to avoid a similar fate.

"We're hoping that Edwin and Wayne are fit for Sunday, I think it's important for the reasons of Wayne's form, he's been fantastic, we're really pleased with the way he's performing. And Edwin's experience, there's no definite indication they're going to be fit but they have a chance. Other than that it will be the same squad we've been operating with," he said.

"The FA Cup's the FA Cup. It's a tournament you can never be sure about. We made a mistake last year, we picked a team which we thought would be good enough to beat Leeds (then a League One side) but we got a reminder that the FA Cup is a Cup which has shocks, we got one last year and hopefully we don't get one this year. I think I picked the wrong team last year."

Webb boneka MU: Babel

LONDON: Akibat keceluparan menuduh pengadil, Howard Webb sebagai boneka Manchester United menerusi laman web sosial Twitter, penyerang Liverpool Ryan Babel bakal berdepan tindakan disiplin dari Persatuan Bola Sepak Inggeris (FA).

Penyerang Belanda itu turut meletakkan gambar Webb yang diubah memakai jersi Manchester United, sambil berkata: “Dan mereka menobatkannya (Webb) sebagai antara pengadil terbaik? Ini satu jenaka,” kata Babel.
Selain Babel, pengendali baru Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish turut melabelkan keputusan Webb menganugerahkan penalti kepada United dan melayangkan kad merah kepada kapten The Reds, Steven Gerrard sebagai tidak masuk akal.
Anak Dalglish, Paul, dengan lantang menyuarakan rasa tidak puas hati selepas kekalahan 0-1 Liverpool kepada United pada pertembungan Piala FA kelmarin: “Fergie mempunyai boneka - Howard Webb di hujung tali,” kata bekas penyerang Newcastle itu.

Webb mencetus kemarahan kem Liverpool apabila menganugerahkan sepakan penalti pada minit pertama kepada tuan rumah, United yang disempurnakan Ryan Giggs dan kekal sebagai gol tunggal perlawanan, sebelum menghukum Gerrard keluar padang.

Pengadil perlawanan final Piala Dunia antara Sepanyol dan Belanda itu yang baru menerima anugerah kehormat kerajaan British, MBE, dianggap antara pengadil terbaik dunia, tetapi mendapat kecaman hebat daripada Liverpool selepas perlawanan kelmarin.

“Kami akan melihat perkara ini dengan lebih mendalam,” kata jurucakap FA dalam satu kenyataan berkenaan komen negatif Babel terhadap Webb. - AFP
