DDLJ completes 18 years, still running at Maratha Mandir
Aditya Chopra’s eternal romantic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has completed 18 long years since its initial release way back in October 1995. The film, which released 2 weeks before its lead star Shahrukh Khan’s 30th birthday, is still running to packed houses at Mumbai’s famous Maratha Mandir.

To celebrate the occasion we bring you 5 unknown facts of India’s most loved romantic film.
- Aditya Chopra first offered the role of Raj to Saif Ali Khan, who rejected it. Shahrukh Khan was then signed to play the lead role opposite Kajol. The rest, as they say, is history.
- The first shot of DDLJ was shot at the Trafalgar Square in London. It has Amrish Puri feeding doves, a habit which he follows before he opens his shop every day.
- Karan Johar made his acting debut in DDLJ where he played the character of Rocky.
- Shahrukh’s friends in the film, Karan Johar and Arjun Sablok, both went on to become directors. Johar directed Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, another landmark film in the history of Indian Cinema. Sablok directed Hrithik Roshan in Na Tum Jaano Na Hum.
- The title of the film was suggested by Anupam Kher’s wife Kiron Kher.
On 20th October 1995 a love story was born called Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. 18 years later and the movie is still running at the Maratha Mandir cinema in Mumbai, India and has become the longest running movie in the history of Indian cinema and one of its most iconic and game changing movies. DDLJ starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as Raj and Simran in lead roles. 18 years later and many girls are still waiting for someone like Raj to enter their lives and many have cherished memories attached with the movie. DDLJ was produced by the late Yash Chopra under the YRF banner and was directed by his son Aditya Chopra (his debut directorial venture).

- Aditya Chopra initially wanted to cast Tom Cruise for the role of Raj Malhotra.
- Kirron Kher came up with the title Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This is the first film in the history of Bollywood with a credit of ‘title suggested by’.
- SRK’s famous leather jacket was bought by Uday Chopra from a Harley-Davidson store in Bakersfield, California, for $400.
- SRK initially refused the film because he regarded romances as ‘‘pansy stuff.’’ It took Aditya four meetings to convince him.
- In case SRK didn’t agree, Aditya thought of approaching Saif Ali Khan.
- Aditya named SRK ‘Raj’ after Raj Kapoor.
- Aditya Chopra had lots of trouble filming the scene where Raj jokes with Simran about the previous night.
- The reason was that every time Shah Rukh Khan would open his shirt, Kajol would not stop laughing. The pictures of the lips on the chest were drawn by Kajol.
