KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 — Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan is alleged to have offered players at Cardiff City a £3.7 million (RM20.2 million) bonus to stave off relegation, breaching English Premier League rules. British tabloid Daily Mail reported that Tan, who owns the Welsh football club, offered the bonus before the team’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. “Sportsmail can reveal Tan broke Premier League rules, which state every team must lodge their bonus schedule before the start of the season, when he gave his players a financial incentive to avoid relegation,” the paper said. Tan hadn’t offered the Cardiff squad a bonus to avoid the drop before the campaign began because he did not believe they would be in a relegation fight after his significant investment, it added. In a recent BBC interview, Tan insisted he is not the “villain” he is sometimes portrayed as. The 62-year-old Malaysian businessman accused the British media of being “a little bit racist”, BBC reported. -MMail.
