KUCHING: The Bako Indah Volunteer Firemen Unit chairman became the hero of the day when he rescued a Sesco contractor from drowning after the latter slipped from a jetty yesterday.
The incident took place around 9am at Kampung Bako Ulu when the 58-year-old contractor and a colleague were about to conduct meter checks at the village after crossing the river from Kampung Bako Seberang.
A spokesperson from the state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim fell into the river after losing his footing on the jetty, and was struggling to keep himself afloat.
“The chairman of the Bako Indah Volunteer Firemen Unit, Noh Yahim, happened to be doing repair works on a nearby house and immediately rushed to aid the victim.
“Using the same boat that the victim and his colleague had arrived in, Noh swiftly manoeuvred his way to the victim and grabbed the flailing contractor’s arms before pulling him into the boat,” said the spokesperson.
The victim was then rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital where doctors drained his lungs, which were about 40 per cent filled with water.
He is reportedly in stable condition.
Meanwhile, Bomba Kuching Zone chief Tiong Ling Hii praised Noh’s quick action in saving the contractor from drowning, describing him as a very active member in all Bomba-related activities.
“In fact, the Bako Indah Volunteer Firemen team led by Noh is among the most active groups so far when it comes to events organised by Bomba,” added Tiong. - Sarawak News |
