The Jews and the Americans are now laughing and cheering because Muslims are fighting each other over sectarian differences, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said tonight.
The statesman, who often turned his vitriol against Israel and the West, said the warring Sunni and Shia sects both professed to be followers of the faith, yet were too focused on their differences to make peace.
"We have no right to say they are not Muslims because they are unlike us, their appearance is different, their clothes are different.
"Because of that, we fight, we are at war. The ones who laugh are the Jews and America. They laugh and clap because Muslims are doing their jobs for them.
"Because they, too, intend to kill Muslims. But without making any effort, Muslims are killing each other," said Dr Mahathir in his speech at an event to commemorate past Malay leaders, organised by Muslim rights group, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma).
He said the sectarian wars in the Middle East could also spread to Malaysia if the predominantly Sunni Muslims here persecuted the Shia. Dr Mahathir spoke out against such persecution, saying that as long as the Shia recited the shahadah (testimony of faith), they, too, were Muslims.
He urged all Muslims here to set aside their differences and unite to fight for the religion, race and country.
"If we divide ourselves because of our different understanding, we cannot unite the Malays, Muslims in the country.
"We have NGOs and all, we have different organisations. Our focus may be different, but our goals are the same.
"We should focus on the goals and not our differences." – September 14, 2015.
