ALOR SETAR: A 16-year-old girl ran away from home – all because of a misunderstanding over a handphone.

Her father could not control his emotions at a press conference that was called in the hope of finding her.

Kitchen staff Khor Ooi Seen, 48, cried as MCA Crisis Relief Squad (CRSM) Alor Setar chief Daniel Tan read out a letter that was written by Yi Qian (pic) before she ran away on Sept 30.

Apologising for running away, the teenager said she was disappointed with her family for not giving her a chance to improve herself.

She also told her father that she would be “going somewhere far away” and asked her parents not to disturb her best friend over her disappearance.

Wiping away his tears, Khor remained quiet throughout the conference at the Alor Setar CRSM office in Pekan Cina yesterday.

His wife, waitress N. Sithara Devi, 46, said the Form Four student could have run away thinking that her parents did nothing to claim back her handphone, which was confiscated by her school on Sept 25.

Sithara said she went to the school on Sept 28 and on Sept 30 to try to get back the phone.

“But the principal was not around on both occasions,” she said, adding that on the day her daughter ran way, she was seen waiting for someone at about 7pm at their home in Taman Bahagia here.

“She went out via the backdoor after hugging her sister and taking RM50 from her.

“We found her clothes missing and the letter for her dad,” Sithara said.

A police report was lodged on Thursday.

Yi Qian, the youngest among four siblings, has not called home since she left. Tan said he believed she is still in the state.
