2014 Detroit Auto Show: 2015 Volkswagen Golf R debuts as VW's most powerful hatch ever
The most powerful Volkswagen Golf ever made its debut Monday at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With 290 horsepower on tap, the next-generation Golf R promises the power and performance to rival the Subaru STI while still offering Volkswagen refinement.

The Volkswagen R32 and Golf R have earned a cult following among enthusiasts as likable hot hatches that combine performance with Volkswagen quality and sophistication. Here in Detroit, VW showed the latest in its series of performance hatchbacks, the next-generation Golf R.

A new engine makes the new Golf R more powerful than ever, spinning out 290 horses, 34 more than the last version, and putting the Golf R in Subaru WRX WTI and Mitsubishi Evo territory. The new engine launches the car from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds when equipped with the optional DSG six-speed dual-clutch transmission or 5.3 seconds with the six-speed manual.

It's also more fuel efficient.

VW says the highway fuel economy rating with the manual transmission will improve from 27 to 31 mpg. With either transmission, the Golf R sends its power to all four wheels via a fifth-generation Haldex coupling.

Built on the Mark VII Golf platform, the 2015 Golf R has several features designed to enhance performance. These include progressive variable-ratio steering, a stability control system that can be deactivated for track driving, and, most importantly, an optional DCC dynamic chassis control suspension with adjustable dampers and Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport modes. A Driving Profile Selector has four additional modes and interfaces with other systems to tailor the dynamic character to the driver's desires.

The Golf R sits 0.2 inch lower than the GTI and it has upgraded vented disc brakes with black "R" logos on the calipers. Exterior features include unique 18-inch wheels, large front air intakes, side skirts, and matte chrome door mirror caps. Inside, it has leather-upholstered sport seats, a unique R three-spoke steering wheel, "carbon touch" trim, and stainless-steel look pedals and kick plates.
