Havelsan Teams up with Thales on Indonesia's 90 m OPV Programme
Turkish defence systems company Havelsan is working with Thales Nederland to equip Indonesia's new class of two 90 m offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) with its combat sensors.
Backed by documentary evidence, an industry source has informed Janes that while Havelsan has received the primary contract to equip these vessels with its Advent combat management system (CMS) and associated sensors, it is subcontracting the hardware component to Thales. However, the final configuration for the combat sensors is yet to be decided.
The OPVs will be the first Indonesian Navy vessels to be equipped with a Turkish CMS.
As first reported by Janes in 2019, Indonesia has conceived the need for a new class of OPVs to fulfil operational gaps that exist between the service's patrol boats and its larger surface combatants.
A contract for two vessels in the new class was eventually awarded to privately owned Indonesian shipbuilder PT Daya Radar Utama, and a first steel-cutting for both ships was held in August 2021 at the company's shipyard in Lampung, Surabaya.
Each vessel will displace 1,800 tonnes at standard load, and 2,100 tonnes at full load. It will have a top speed of 28 kt, an economical speed of 15 kt, and a cruising speed of 20 kt. It can operate at up to Sea State 5 and survive up to Sea State 6.

Dubai, 18 November 2021 – The Indonesia Ministry of Defence has placed an order for two Airbus A400M aircraft in multirole tanker and transport configuration.
The contract, which will become effective in 2022, will bring the total number of A400M operators to ten nations. The agreement includes a complete maintenance and training support package. A Letter of Intent was also signed for the future acquisition of four additional A400M aircraft.
”This new order will further expand the A400M footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. The A400M offers outstanding capabilities to Indonesia, providing its air force with the perfect platform to deliver large and heavy loads into remote areas and multiplying its airpower projection thanks to reliable aerial refuelling capabilities,” said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space.
Capable of operating from rough and short runways, the A400M will strengthen the Indonesian Air Force’s airlift capabilities to rapidly respond to any crisis, demonstrated in the aftermath of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck the country in 2018. The A400M was the first large airlifter able to deliver heavy loads like fuel trucks and excavators as well as food, clothes and medical supplies using a damaged and short runway in Palu (Central Sulawesi, Indonesia).
“The A400M is a truly multi-role platform and will greatly enhance the Indonesian Air Force’s tactical air-to-air capabilities. This aircraft will play a key role in other key missions including paratrooping and heavy cargo transportation. We are also looking at additional A400M acquisition in the near term, with future A400M developments such as firefighting an important capability we are exploring jointly with Airbus. The A400M will become a national asset and the cornerstone for Human Assistance and Disaster Response missions, beyond its tactical and air-to-air capabilities,” said Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia.
Dibalik Kesepakatan Dan Keuntungan Dalam Pembelian A400 M MRTT ADA OFFSET Besar Buat INDONESIA.

Indonesia seeks more autonomy on CN235 production in offset talks for A400M
Indonesia is seeking greater autonomy from Airbus in the manufacturing process for the CN235 twin-turboprop aircraft.
Meeting documents provided to Janes indicate that Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials have included this objective as an offset condition should Jakarta decide to procure A400M multirole aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force.
The CN235 is a medium-range utility aircraft that was jointly developed by Construcciones Aeron´auticas SA (now part of Airbus) and Indonesian manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia – PTDI (earlier known as IPTN) in the 1980s.
Several variants of the aircraft have since been developed, with PTDI securing contracts for maritime patrol and transport versions of the airframe with customers like the Indonesian armed forces, the Nepal Army Air Wing, and the Senegalese Air Force since 1993.
As reported by Janes in October 2021, the Indonesian MoD has restarted talks to potentially procure a fleet of Airbus A400Ms to enhance military airlift capabilities of its air force. Indonesian defence planners are also in consultation with Airbus to understand if the aircraft type can also fulfil its air force's in-flight refuelling requirements.
An attendance list of the recent meeting that took place between Indonesian officials and Airbus on 1 October includes five representatives from the MoD's Directorate General for Defence Potential, a senior executive of PTDI, and representatives from state-owned aerospace service provider, GMF AeroAsia.
Documents from this meeting further indicate that PTDI is pushing to manufacture more segments of the CN235 at its facilities in Bandung, Indonesia.
These segments are namely the aircraft's inboard flaps, nose fuselage, engine cowlings, nose and main landing gears assemblies, and centre wing box assembly.

John Cockerill Defense has recently signed a contract with PT Pindad Enjiniring Indonesia (a subsidiary of PT PINDAD) to supply training simulators for the Indonesian Army. AGUERIS, a subsidiary of John Cockerill Defense France, will develop and manufacture cabin simulators for the training of armored vehicle crews. These are “Harimau” medium-type tank vehicles equipped with the C3105 turret (105mm) from John Cockerill Defense.
The simulators will be of the Cabin type mounted on a motion platform, allowing the training of the Harimau vehicle pilot and the C3105 turret crew in high-fidelity conditions and excellent representation of the local environment.
This new success comes on top of last year's SERKET program in France, won by AGUERIS as a co-contractor, which consists of supplying all the new generation training simulators required for the Scorpion Programme to the French Army.
"We are delighted to have been chosen for this forward-looking program in Indonesia. This project will also allow AGUERIS to strengthen its presence in the military land simulation markets in Asia and to offer an even more efficient service to its customers" said Yves Jourde, President of AGUERIS.
