ONLINE MILESTONE: Bahasa version of global professional networking site spurs top talent to list their names on portal

KUALA LUMPUR:MALAYSIANS, already recognised as the friendliest on social networking websites, have again created an online milestone.

On Thursday, the millionth Malaysian registered on LinkedIn, a global professional networking site.

LinkedIn managing director (Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia division) Clifford Rosenberg said that the one million member milestone was significant following the launch of the Bahasa Malaysia site, last year.

"The launch has spurred a whole new generation of LinkedIn users locally and professionals are building their profiles, connecting with a global network, gaining relevant business insights and seeking out their dream jobs."

Rosenberg said Malaysia was facing a challenge for top talents and cited that some of the reasons were because of a limited talent pool and the Gen Y attraction to work in other Southeast Asian countries.

"With an increasing number of new members signing up, LinkedIn's global reach and scale can help professionals and companies in Malaysia connect with talent through its large network of resources."

AirAsia X executive Tanes Kumar Maniam said LinkedIn was a platform that "leveraged a person's talent before going out to another company".

An active member since 2008, Tanes said the site allowed him to post his achievements, career background and talents for other professionals to view.

"Apart from expanding your network to people in the same industry," said Tanes, the site enabled one's profile to be "recommended" and this increased the person's work credibility.

"Instead of just claiming to know a skill in your profile, with another person recommending you, it helps others to place trust in your credentials and expertise."

Another LinkedIn member, Business Boosters Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Vyasa Kandasamy, said the portal was an employment tool meant for those wishing to climb the corporate ladder.

"The site is more powerful than a social networking site as it has less fluff and focuses on propelling a person's career or business."

Having joined last year, Vyasa said his profile had indirectly helped his "connections" with their businesses.

"Also, if I was more active and participated in business-related forums, I would then be able to reap the benefits from LinkedIn."

According to LinkedIn Malaysia, the top three companies with the most employees on the site were Petronas, Telekom Malaysia and Intel.

The top three industries were oil and energy, information technology and services and education management.

The top three universities were Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Malaya.
