KUANTAN: Six of the 24 sports to be contested at the 15th Malaysia Games (Sukma) here will begin competition before the opening ceremony on July 7.
Chief executive officer of Pahang Sukma secretariat Ahmad Hairi Hussain said the first sport to be contested is karate starting today with eight gold medals up for grabs.
The eight categories are men’s individual kata, women’s individual kata, men’s individual kumite under 60kg, women’s individual kumite under 45kg, men’s individual kumite above 84kg, women’s individual kumite above 68kg, men’s individual kumite under 84kg and women’s individual kumite under 68kg.
Karate, to be held at the Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Sports Complex, will offer eight more gold medals tomorrow in the men’s and women’s team kata, women’s individual kumite under 55kg, men’s individual kumite under 67kg, women’s individual kumite under 50kg, men’s individual kumite under 55kg, women’s individual kumite under 61kg and men’s individual kumite under 75kg.
Other sports to be contested before the opening ceremony are cycling in Temerloh (July 4-14), football at FAM Football Academy, Gambang (July 4-15), men’s hockey at Stadium Hoki Wisma Belia, Indera Mahkota (July 5-15), taekwondo at UMP Sports Complex (July 3-6) and yachting at Pantai Balok (July 6-11).
Eighteen sports will be contested after the opening ceremony by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, at Stadium Darul Makmur on July 7.
A total of 369 gold medals will be up for grabs in the Games which will see the participation of 5,828 athletes and officials. — Bernama |

Sukma Medal Winners Will Receive Special Incentives - MB
KUANTAN July 2 (Bernama) - Pahang athletes who win medals at the ongoing 15th Malaysia Games (Sukma) will receive special incentives from the state government.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said incentives will also be given to technical officers and members of the cheerleading team.
"Incentives of RM3,000 await Pahang athletes who win gold medals at Sukma, RM2,000 for silver medal winners and RM1,000 for bronze medal winners.
"They are given to encourage the people, especially the young to get involved in sports," he said at a function to present contribution for 15th Sukma here today.
Sports officials and technical staff receive incentives of RM150 daily from the state government while athletes and cheerleading team members receive incentives of RM50 daily during Sukma.

Kedah sets 36-gold target for Pahang SUKMA
ALOR SETAR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Kedah has set a 36-gold medal target for the Pahang SUKMA to be held in Kuantan, Temerloh and Pekan from July 7 to 16.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the 36-gold target was based on the current performance of the athletes.
Kedah finished sixth in the 2010 Melaka SUKMA after accumulating 39 gold, 20 silver and 31 bronze medals.
The Kedah contingent comprising 371 athletes would compete in all 24 sports contested while 377 gold medals would be on offer in the games.
"Our strongest contenders will be Terengganu, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur," said Azizan after the flag handing ceremony for the Kedah contingent at Seri Mentaloon here today.
He added that Kedah were targetting gold medals from football, weightlifting, cycling, athletics, pencak silat, archery and taekwondo.
Azizan said the state government would reward medal winners with RM3,500 for gold, RM2,000 (silver and RM1,000 (bronze), if the target of 36 gold medals was achieved.

Pulau Pinang Kuasai Pungutan Pingat Pada Hari Kedua SUKMA
KUANTAN, 2 Julai (Bernama) -- Pulau Pinang terus mendominasi acara karate pada Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) ke-15 apabila memenangi dua lagi pingat emas pada hari kedua acara itu Isnin.
Kejayaan meraih dua emas itu meletakkan Pulau Pinang mendahului pungutan pingat keseluruhan dalam kalangan 14 kontinjen dengan lima emas dan tiga gangsa.
Selangor di tempat kedua dengan pungutan empat emas, dua perak dan dua gangsa diikuti Wilayah Persekutuan dengan tiga emas, dua perak dan dua gangsa manakala Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang dan Kedah masing-masing meraih satu emas.
Acara karate yang berlangsung di Kompleks Sukan Universiti Malaysia Pahang merupakan acara paling awal dipertandingkan pada temasya itu dengan menawarkan 16 pingat emas keseluruhan.
Dalam acara hari ini, Pulau Pinang memenangi dua emas menerusi gandingan Goh, Joshua Wong dan Loh dalam kategori Kata Lelaki Berpasukan selepas menumpaskan atlet Sabah yang terdiri daripada Alvin, Farlin Veroney dan Hazwan Nafeez.
Satu lagi pingat emas kontinjen Puala Mutiara itu diperoleh menerusi gandingan Celine Lee, Khaw dan Thor dalam kategori Wanita Berpasukan yang mengalahkan Diedre Aprille, Emelda dan Ryana Chong dari Sabah.
Atlet Selangor Senthil Kumaran Silvarajoo pula meraih emas dalam kategori Kumite Lelaki Individu bawah 55kg selepas mengatasi Prem Kumar Selvam dari Wilayah Persekutuan.
Pingat emas acara Kumite Lelaki Individu bawah 67kg pula milik Sharmendran Raghonathan dari Selangor yang menumpaskan atlet Wilayah Persekutuan Shahabudin Jamaludin manakala pingat emas kategori Lelaki Individu bawah 75kg dirangkul Sharrma Jayarama dari Wilayah Persekutuan yang mengalahkan Kumareswaran Murugan dari Selangor.
Victoria Hu Li French (Johor) pula meraih emas dalam kategori Wanita Individu bawah 50kg selepas membenam cabaran Vijaya Letcumi Gopalasamy (Negeri Sembilan) sementara IIavarasi Mohan (Selangor) yang mengenepikan cabaran Santhini Raveenderan (Wilayah Persekutuan) memenangi emas kategori Wanita Individu bawah 55kg.
Kategori Wanita Individu bawah 61kg pula menjadi milik Syakillah Salni Jefry Krishnan @ Krishnamurty (Selangor) yang mengalahkan Vidya Darshini Subramaniam dari Negeri Sembilan.
