8-hour time-restricted eating linked to a 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death

CHICAGO, March 18, 2024 — An analysis of over 20,000 U.S. adults found that people who limited their eating across less than 8 hours per day, a time-restricted eating plan, were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease compared to people who ate across 12-16 hours per day, according to preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention│Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Scientific Sessions 2024, March 18- 21, in Chicago. The meeting offers the latest science on population-based health and wellness and implications for lifestyle.

Time-restricted eating, a type of intermittent fasting, involves limiting the hours for eating to a specific number of hours each day, which may range from a 4- to 12-hour time window in 24 hours. Many people who follow a time-restricted eating diet follow a 16:8 eating schedule, where they eat all their foods in an 8-hour window and fast for the remaining 16 hours each day, the researchers noted. Previous research has found that time-restricted eating improves several cardiometabolic health measures, such as blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

“Restricting daily eating time to a short period, such as 8 hours per day, has gained popularity in recent years as a way to lose weight and improve heart health,” said senior study author Victor Wenze Zhong, Ph.D., a professor and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in Shanghai, China. “However, the long-term health effects of time-restricted eating, including risk of death from any cause or cardiovascular disease, are unknown.”

In this study, researchers investigated the potential long-term health impact of following an 8-hour time-restricted eating plan. They reviewed information about dietary patterns for participants in the annual 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) in comparison to data about people who died in the U.S., from 2003 through December 2019, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Death Index database.

Never believe any study, paper, survey etc without checking out who did it and who funded it!
The researchers must be heavily invested in fast food supply. or pharmaceuticals. or the media. Thanks Doc.  I take a beating about the DANGERS of carnivore and OMAD.  63 and better health now than the last 30 years.
Billions of people from different religions who fast regularly would disagree.
The real issue is that fasting doesn’t make anyone a profit. So it must be “dangerous”.
This is insane.  I am type 2 diabetic.  One year ago my A1C was very high.  My doctor wanted too put me on insulin.  I refused.  Through intermittent fasting, the appropriate supplements, and exercise my A1C is now below 6.  I am in my 60s.  How in the world could intermittent fasting put me at a higher risk of heart disease?  This is simply another example of big brother trying to control the masses and thin the heard.

ramai dh doktor warning, kalau pempuan jgn over dlm if. kalau boleh time period off intermittent fasting (supurti yg dh dikabo dlm amalan ugama kiter). aku pun rajin gak buat if, cuma bila buat long term dia jadi kuat nk jajan, rupanya mmg ade kluar info yg long term if boleh jdi eating disorder iaitu binge eating tmbahan kalau ko mmg dh diet dlm tempoh yg sgt lama, dh la makanan restrictive, puasa plak lagi.utk org perempuan tak elok a long term. huhu aku dh pernah buat 16:8, omad, dan alternate day fasting adf. yg 16:8 tu lama buat 5 tahun ade rasanya, omad kejap je, yg adf tu ade dlm 2 bulan je buat. adf tu best rasa dia, saje a try sbb time tu adf tengah hype. plus time tu tga kepoh psl autophagy, sbb autophagy kata deme kena puasa dlm 24jam, rupanya autophagy leh je dpt dgn diet low protein. so ade hari dlm sminggu tu ko takyah/low makan protein. style if yg 16:8 tak bekpes tu pun lama2 jadi metabolism slow, sbb tu a kot syarat kena sahur time puasa. puasa kita tak lebih dari 14 jam kan dri subuh ke maghrib?? dan long term puasa yg elok style nabi daud. so skrg aku dh tk buat if puasa style omputeh. dari tahun lepas takde if if dah..ok a rasa dia kurg nk cranky je hangri ke ape tp naik a bdn dlm 10kg kesahhhhh sbb masih saiz m (alhamdulillah , bukan cambagos tp sbb kalau atas m mmg penat lg bnyk kerja, kena tahan shaming lagi cam tuttttt ). tp dlm bnyk puasa ni, mmg best adf tu, nnti ingt nk try buat nabi daud style. rupanya ramai dh bertahun buat (baca komen2 kt tt sgala lah)
tapi aku rasa ade pekdah a dri smua bnde yg aku dh buat sbelum ni, sbb ikutkn tahap aku makan, lebih dri 10kg naik ptotnye huhu kbai

byk sgt sebenarnya publications pasal Ramadhan dan Diabetes ini
malah di UK ini, byk benar leaflets dan apa2 info je lah tentang puasa in ramadhan
the majority nya ialah tentang how to accommodate org diabetes utk berpuasa
dgn jelas mereka kata: if diabetes yg guna insulin, then tidak digalakkan puasa

bagi saya yg perlu diikut: rules dan recommendations dari Adama kita:
-if ada penyakit merbahaya, jgn puasa
-if terlampau penat, jgn puasa
-if dalam perjalanan, jgn puasa
-if muntah, jangan puasa
-if pregnant, jangan puasa etc etc

bagi saya, Muslims yg lawan ini semua dan mendapat keburukan, hanyalah memburukkan Islam
sy faham concept inginkan ketaqwaan, namun jika sampai membawa fitnah kepada Agama, siapakah yg untung?

IF ini bukan sama seperti puasa... Ada problem sudah continuously untuk masa lama untuk weight loss... Bukan 1 tahun 30 days max... Yang ada health issue tidak galak kan puasa pun... Buat liquid diet or cut sugar..cut sugar and salt ini boleh alter taste bud...

Bila baca tajuk mcm eh perlu ke hasil research ni released time bulan Ramadan but bila baca komen u, it does make sense..study ni based on 16:8 prolonged fasting while islamic fasting hanya sebulan sekali...IF ni makin popular kt negara barat sebab tu akan ada researcher buat kajian sebegini sbb ramai sgt yg nak tahu betul ke berkesan..

Memang pun kalau pesakit kencing manis kronik kalau dia dehydrated, ada risiko kena serangan jantung. Ini yang doktor cakaplah. Kalau yg muda2 sihat tubuh badan sado tu, jangan mengelat puasa tau!

i dont like n not a fan of IF. i rasa mmg ade kesan x bagus utk diri i. tp kalau rasa bagus utk diri u. teruskan amalam. btw, IF ni bukan puasa org muslim, ni salah satu cara mengurangkan berat badan n penyakit.
