Official: Bahrain Grand Prix postponed

Officials at the Sakhir International Circuit have announced that the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled as a result of the current political unrest in the country. With the statement having come from the country’s Royal family, the final pre-season Formula 1 test session has also been called off. The 2011 season will now begin two weeks later, in Australia on 27 March.

Talk of Bahrain has very much overshadowed the last four days’ of testing in Barcelona, with the majority of drivers having expressed their fears for the event and Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone having placed its destiny in the hands of the Royal family.

‘Bahrain International Circuit announces Bahrain’s withdrawal from the first race of the F1 season,’ reads the track’s official Twitter feed. ‘HRH Crown Prince informed Formula One’s Bernie Ecclestone of the BIC’s decision by telephone earlier today.’

“We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest,” the Crown Prince commented.” The statement continued: ‘At the present time the country’s entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain.’

It is likely that the race will be placed further down the calendar, possibly becoming Round 18 between India and Abu Dhabi. Today's news marks the first date change for a Grand Prix since Belgium 1985, when the Spa track surface was breaking up.

‘Artificial rain better than adjustable wings’

Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone does not expect the adjustable rear wing, new for 2011 and brought in with the hope of improving overtaking opportunities, to be successful on the track – instead suggesting that sprinkler systems to wet circuits would make for more interesting Grands Prix.

When asked by the official F1 website if World Champion Sebastian Vettel’s doubts over the new rear wings are valid, Englishman Ecclestone replied:

“He’s probably right. It is very difficult to control it by the stewards because the window of usage is very small. The chances for protests are inevitably there.

“To me this system looks pretty dangerous. What if the wings are not up again before the corner and the driver is lacking downforce? That could easily lead to incidents. We have to observe it carefully.”

The 80-year-old, who adds that his medals system – which would see the driver who wins most races crowned Champion – should still be used, then went on to describe methods for artificial rain in order to spice up races.

“There are race tracks that you can make artificially wet and it would be easy to have such systems at a number of tracks,” he said.

“Why not let it ‘rain’ in the middle of a race? For 20 minutes or the last ten laps? Maybe with a two-minute warning ahead of it. Suspense would be guaranteed and it would be the same for all.”

Korean Grand Prix ticket prices lowered

Organisers of the Korean Grand Prix have significantly lowered tickets prices ahead of their second Formula 1 race this October. The sport will be returning to the Yeongam-based circuit following a dramatic encounter which resulted in victory for Fernando Alonso and Ferrari in the closing stages of the 2010 season.

Although the race was generally seen as a large success, with it picking up the FIA’s award for best organised Grand Prix of the season, the inaugural event proved to be a disappointment commercially, with 170,000 spectators having visited the circuit over the week of last year’s race but with thousands of tickets remaining unsold.

However, it has now been confirmed by Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) that fans will enjoy a half price offer if tickets are purchased in March, with the average price of an entrance having now been decreased from 460,000 won (250 pounds) last year, with the cheapest tickets now being available for 87,000 won (47 pounds).

“This year we will try to improve our ticket sales, advertising and other areas of our operations,” Park Joon-young, head of the Korean Grand Prix organising committee, explained to the Yonhap news agency on Wednesday.

“I know that there were controversies about our construction and also ticket prices, so we will try our best so that motorsport can develop into a key part of our leisure industry.”

Alonso against more pit-stops in races

Fernando Alonso has hit out against this year’s Pirelli tyres, which are designed to degrade quicker than the Bridgestone products of previous seasons and therefore cause the need for more pit-stops in Grands Prix; the Ferrari driver believes that such a strategy could work against the larger, front-running teams.

“From what we have seen so far, degradation is very significant, which means we will have races with lots of pit-stops,” the Spaniard commented.

“I’m not keen on that because I think this increased uncertainty does not favour the strongest teams; it’s as if in football it was decided to have a penalty per team each half hour - in which case Barcelona and Real Madrid would not be jumping for joy.

“However, the situation is the same for everyone. It will be important to be fastest because I don’t think we can make one stop less than our main rivals.”
