ASEAN is important .. but you have to fly
further to utilize and expand your country to protect your national interests.  China, India and Brazil are all good examples if you want to be one regional major powers like them .. Indonesia can achieve that if you have a new visioner leaders like Deng Xio Ping, Mamoohan Singh or Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ... Yes, currently you have a president .. but, not a leader because your current president has no vision and leadership like them ...

Indonesia can learn from China if Indonesia want to be respected by other countries ....

as ur wish..

Indonesia Akan Tiru Ekonomi China
Saat ini cadangan devisa China 2,6 triliun dollar AS, pendapatan per kapita penduduk 3.600 dollar AS. Pertumbuhan ekonomi China mencapai 11 persen.
Menurut Chen Jian, nilai perdagangan Indonesia-China 37,8 miliar dollar AS.
Pajak, misalnya, hanya dikenakan bila perusahaan untung selama 2 tahun pertama. Tiga hingga lima tahun berikutnya, perusahaan itu cukup membayar pajak setengahnya.

Indonesia to make sure ASEAN progressing
Wednesday, January 12, 2011 18:42 WIB | National | | Viewed 145 time(s)
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is to make sure that ASEAN achieves significant and concrete progress during 2011, a minister said.

ASEAN`s significant progress towards the formation of an ASEAN Community 2015 was one of three priorities set by Indonesia for its one-year leadership, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said at the handing over ceremony of ASEAN Permanent Representative Head post at the ASEAN Secretariat here Wednesday.

It would begin with having a measurable scorecard needed to assess achievements made by each ASEAN member country in implementing ASEAN policies politically, economically and socio-culturally.

The ASEAN Secretariat would play an important role in measuring all achievements made by ASEAN member nations, he said.

The second priority will be the relations between ASEAN and other regions, particularly concerning the East Asia Summit (EAS) which consists of Japan, China, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, India, and two newly accepted members, the US and Russia.

The inclusion of the US and Russia in EAS was proposed by Indonesia in order to achieve a dynamic equilibrium, he said.

The third priority, according to Marty, is ASEAN should have a common platform on global issues.

"Indonesia`s main task as the ASEAN chairman is also to make sure that there will be significant progress in the issues of democracy and human rights," he said.

The priorities would be discussed in a Senior Official Meeting (SOM) of ASEAN which will be held in Lombok, January 13-14, 2011.

Indonesia officially took over the ASEAN Chairmanship from Viet Nam on 1 January. Indonesia`s theme for its Chairmanship, "ASEAN Community in a Global Community of Nations".

The new chairman of permanent representatives to ASEAN is Indonesia`s Permanent Representative to ASEAN Ambassador I Gede Ngurah Swajaya.

Indonesia urges South China Sea code of conduct
Afp, Medana

A code of conduct is urgently needed between Beijing and southeast Asian nations to prevent conflict in the South China Sea, Indonesia said yesterday.

Nine years have passed since the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China agreed to develop a code of conduct and the time had come for talks to produce results, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

"There has been plenty of time for the guidelines to be considered," he told reporters in Medana, Lombok, after a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers.

"If we allow the situation ... to remain dormant and inactive it can create unnecessary complications."

Time to lift sanctions on Myanmar, ASEAN says
Abdul Khalik and Andi Haswidi, The Jakarta Post, Lombok | Mon, 01/17/2011 10:55 AM | Headlines A | A | A        |
ASEAN urged an easing of the sanctions against Myanmar, but urged the country’s military junta to continue efforts to reconcile with the opposition, especially with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
During their retreat meeting here Sunday, ASEAN foreign ministers spoke about the need for countries such as the US, the European Union (EU) and Canada — all ASEAN dialogue partners — to consider lifting their sanctions because the country had successfully conducted general elections and released Suu Kyi from house arrest late last year.
Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said there was an external dimension to the Myanmar issue, namely a belief by ASEAN countries for the early removal or easing of sanctions applied against Myanmar by several countries.
“We believe that recent developments need to be responded to the international community, especially to ensure that economic development in Myanmar can take place.
However, it should be remembered that lifting the bans and reconciliation go hand in hand,” Marty said after the meeting.
Myanmar joined ASEAN in 1997 despite strong opposition from Western nations.
The US and a number of other countries imposed sanctions — both diplomatic and economic — on Myanmar for its poor human rights record and slow move toward democracy.
ASEAN member states, Marty said, reinforced the importance of having dialogue that was inclusive to ensure that all parties concerned could contribute to Myanmar’s future development.
ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan said Myanmar “should cease to be a problem” this year.
“We still want them to form an inclusive government and continue to adhere to democratic principles,” he said.
ASEAN will continue to assist Myanmar if the country requested it, Surin said.
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said that after elections last year, Myanmar would convene its parliament to elect a president.
“There is a return to democracy. So some countries [that continue to place] sanctions against Myanmar should wake up and nurture the democratization process, provide trade assistance and so on, to improve the quality of life of Myanmar’s people,” he said.
Marty said the sanctions hit the people of Myanmar hard, and urged that assistance to the country would help develop the country and its people.
Surin said a number of ASEAN countries looked for the opportunity to help Myanmar while businesspeople eyed the country as an investment opportunity.
“There are huge opportunities in the country,” he said.

other more modern country in SEA have unelected leader too. guess which one??

Indonesia’s soft power vibrates through others
Abdul Khalik and Andi Haswidi, The Jakarta Post, Lombok | Mon, 01/17/2011 11:11 AM | Special Report

Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo nodded his head in agreement while writing in his notebook, as Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa talked about Indonesia’s priorities for ASEAN.

The ASEAN ministers listened carefully during the retreat meeting at the Oberoi Hotel in Lombok on Sunday. ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan, who sat at Marty’s left, smiled throughout the meeting and praised Marty’s statements.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya and Malaysia Foreign Minister Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman raised occasional questions and offered comments, which Marty took in stride.

Marty interspersed his talk with bits of humor, receiving outbursts of laughter from the other ministers.

Philippine Foreign Minister Alberto Romulo, the most senior and outspoken of the ASEAN ministers, was not in attendance.

A number of ministers said after the meeting that they welcomed Indonesia’s ideas of creating a orum in the three ASEAN pillars — economics, politics and security, and socio-culture — involving all stakeholders, from civil society groups to academics and media, to achieve an ASEAN community by 2015.

“Indonesia’s ideas are always welcomed by other countries,” Surin said.

For example, Indonesia’s position that Myanmar must be rewarded for holding elections and freeing Nobel winner Aung San Suu Kyi was agreed upon by other ASEAN countries.

ASEAN urged the lifting of international sanctions against Myanmar.

In efforts to create and manage regional architecture — including solving disputed claims on areas in the South China Sea — ASEAN continued to look to Indonesia for a breakthrough after years of deadlock in settling the problems.

Four countries have disputes with China over areas in the sea. Those disputes create tension between the navies of the claimant countries; Indonesia is not a claimant country in the disputes.

“Thanks to Indonesian leadership, we’ve re-energized our efforts to find solutions to the disputes,”
Surin said.

Indonesia has also proposed visions for what ASEAN should do after forming its 2015 community to ensure that the group has a common platform to tackle global issues when the time comes.

“Indonesia has always been ahead of the curve in proposing ideas for ASEAN. We very much welcome them,” Surin said.

He said that Thailand has also proposed an agenda for ASEAN after 2015.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit said that ASEAN expected a lot from Indonesia because Indonesia is a big democratic country with the world’s biggest Muslim population.

“Indonesia has been playing a leading role on the world stage for a long, long time — since its very independence. Indonesia is the one who co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement and one of the co-founders of ASEAN. Indonesia is a country that demonstrates tolerance in every sense of the word.

“I think the international community should learn from Indonesia. The principle of Pancasila is still applicable today, applicable for everyone. Instead of just listening to the West, let’s export the Pancasila principles.”

The foreign ministers also got to enjoy their time on Sunday. Marty escorted them to a Lombok beach where, despite the rain, they released turtles and planted trees.

Yeo, for one, particularly enjoyed playing on the beach and releasing almost countless turtles.

exporting Pancasila to the west?  hehehehe....
