PMs Office announces that Shamsul Azhar Abbas, former MD of MISC, has been appointed president and CEO of Petronas, effective Feb 10, 2010.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Tan Sri Hassan Marican’s tenure as chief executive officer of Petronas is over.

He will be replaced next week by Datuk Shamsul Azhar Abbas, a surprise choice given that he, like Hassan, is 57 years old and was not one of the senior Petronas officials identified as part of the succession planning.

Government officials told The Malaysian Insider today that they believed the former senior executive at MISC is best qualified for the top job but is likely to be on a short contract.

His appointment ends months of speculation over whether the Najib administration would extend Hassan’s term as the CEO, a position he has held since 1995.

In recent weeks, it has become more evident that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was looking beyond Hassan, who during his time as CEO and chairman turned Petronas into a major global energy player and a major contributor of revenue for Malaysia.

There has been intense lobbying for the CEO’s position with four names thrown into the hat.

Besides Shamsul, also considered were Petronas stalwarts Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, Anuar Ahmad and Ahmad Nizam Salleh.

Speculation had built up to a frenzy in recent weeks over Hassan’s future.

Some of Hassan’s supporters argue that he is paying the price of saying no too many times to Najib who, as the prime minister, has complete authority over the affairs at the oil company.

They point out that the source of the friction between Najib and Hassan was the decision by the Petronas board to block the appointment of Omar Mustapha, one of the PM’s advisers, as a director.
The appointment of the thirty-something was blocked because he had defaulted on his scholarship loan agreement with Petronas. Najib’s inner circle took the rejection as an affront, a sign of disrespect not only by the board but more so by Hassan.

By appointing Shamsul, who has had a long history in Petronas, the government will hope to minimise some of the criticisms that could come their way over the manner in which Hassan’s position has been handled.

Shamsul retired last January as managing director of MISC, a Petronas subsidiary.

Among the senior positions held in Petronas, Shamsul had been vice-president in the petrochemical, oil exploration and production, as well as logistics and maritime businesses.

He joined Petronas in 1975, and had served previously as executive assistant to former chairman Tan Sri Azizan Zainal Abidin, who died in 2004.
