:cry:Riquelme quits Argentina

Playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme quit the Argentine national side for thesecond time in three years and blamed coach Diego Maradona for hisdecision.

"The national team is over for me," the former Barcelona andVillarreal player, now with Boca Juniors, told the Canal 13 televisionstation in an interview. "I'm going to watch the World Cup on thetelevision."

"We don't think the same way. We don't share thesame codes of ethics. While he is the coach of the national team, wecan't work together."

Maradona told the same televisionstation: "I'm very sad that Riquelme does not want to play in my teambut I'm not going to cry over spilt milk."

It was the second major controversy since Maradona's surprise appointment in October.

Lessthan two weeks after he took over, Maradona reportedly threatened toquit after the Argentine association refused to allow him to name OscarRuggeri as his assistant.

The enigmatic Riquelme, 30 (picturedcentre), previously retired after the 2006 World Cup. He backtrackedless than a year later and led his side to the final of the CopaAmerica with some inspired performances.

Riquelme, who is seen as a classic South American playmaker, has split opinions throughout his career.

Manyadmire his elegant, unhurried style, a rarity in the fast and physicalmodern game, and his ability to prise open defences with slide-rulepasses.

But his critics say the whole team has to be builtaround him and when he underperforms he drags the side down. He alsohas a reputation for underperforming on the big occasion.

Argentine coaches have taken differing views.

MarceloBielsa gave him few chances and left him out of the squad for the 2002World Cup. In 2006 in Germany, Jose Pekerman built the team around himas did his successor Alfio Basile.

At club level, Riquelmeleft Villarreal in 2007 after falling out with the coaching staff whocomplained he had too many privileges.

Riquelme, who returnedto Boca Juniors for a third stint in November 2007 after falling outwith the coaching staff at Villarreal, said he was angry at being leftout of the squad for last month's friendly in France and not being toldfirst hand.
He was also upset with comments Maradona made about him in a television interview last week.

"Iheard that I wasn't playing against France from (general managerCarlos) Bilardo on the radio and then last week he (Maradona) madecomments about my playing style on the television," added Riquelme, whowas in Argentina's Olympic gold medal winning team last year as anoverage player.

"I'd die to wear the shirt of the national team and it's going to hurt me to watch the World Cup on the telly."
"This hurts me a lot and I hope the team does well."

Riquelmehas made 50 appearances for Argentina scoring 17 goals. He has beenleft out of both Argentina's games since Maradona took over because ofclub commitments.

Without him, Argentina beat Scotland and then France.

Maradona turns to Montenegro

Argentina head coach Diego Maradona has chosen Independiente playmaker Daniel Montenegro as the likely successor to Juan Roman Riquelme.Riquelme announced on Tuesday that he would no longer play for Argentina, as the Boca Juniors player believes he has differences of "principles" with Maradona.

Maradona will on Friday announce his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela (March 28) and Bolivia (April 1), and 29-year-old Montenegro appears to be in line to add to his one cap.

"Montenegro has become the person who has to sort a number of things out. I hope he does not step down," Maradona told Radio del Plata.

"However, it does not mean I am announcing he will start the Venezuela match. Now I have to review how to play Venezuela.

"I was thinking of three forwards with Riquelme behind them, but now I will have to analyse how I can attack Venezuela the same way but without Riquelme."

Maradona remains disappointed by Riquelme's decision.

The former Villarreal midfielder has made 51 appearances and scored 17 goals for Argentina, and Maradona believes the player's agent Marcos Franchi influenced Riquelme.

"Those were not Riquelme's words. They were set up by someone. Riquelme offered a very strange press conference. It was prepared by somebody," Maradona claimed.

"The worst thing people can say about me is that I don't have principles.

"I thought Roman felt the national shirt and playing in the national team meant everything. Roman is 30 years old and it was his last chance to prove he had what it takes to play the World Cup in outstanding form.

"(Brazil coach) Dunga, (Venezuela boss) Cesar Farias, the coaches of Italy (Marcello Lippi), the coach of Germany (Joachim Low) may be happy for this. In Argentina, we all lose. Unfortunately, there is no way to turn this around.

"Everything I do is for the national team. It is not a matter of Maradona versus Riquelme. It is only the shirt. The national shirt is beyond us, beyond everybody. It must be defended with or without Riquelme, with or without Maradona."
