Really? Is it not because Brunei's Sultan are so afraid that Malays could revolt against him again? The way Azahari did in late 60s? Can the king bank 100% on local soldiers wheras Gurkhas won't revolt since they are hired soldiers.. paid lushly to do their job as 'Royal Guards'.

Throughout its 46 years of establishment, RBAF has progressed and crossed national borders beyond its tradition, allowing the forces to conduct their duties in safeguarding the safety of the nation and uphold the sovereignty of the sultanate.

The celebration, themed Iltizam Memperkasa Pertahanan Negara or "Commited to Empowering National Defence", was graced by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the RBAF.

With His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince General Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and General of the RBAF.

Shortly after the arrival, His Majesty was given a royal salute by the mass parade stationed on the field and proceeded to inspect the mass parade, comprised of guard of honours, who stood out in rows on the stadium field.

The mass parade performed the slow and fast march, carrying with them the nation's flags as well as RBAF flags. After executing the march past, His Majesty once again received the royal salute, after which a display of Royal Brunei Air Force helicopters fly-by was carried out.

His Majesty then received Tiga Kali Daulat by the mass parade and the crowd listened with rapt attention as His Majesty delivered his titah.

Following the royal address, the mass parade commenced marching out the field to clear the arena for the upcoming field performances, which included a performance by the RBAF band; a display of parachute landing by personnel of the Parachute Airborne Tactical Delivery Unit; abseilling by commandos of the Special Combat Squadron and a display of Close Counter Combat and Unarmed Combat, together with a performance by the Silent Precision Drill Squad.

Ending the field performances, His Majesty received a royal salute by the Commanding Officer of the Military Police. The parade then sang in unison a song entitled Pahlawan Bangsaku.

His Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses then proceeded inside for a cake-cutting presentation.

The pasambah, a wooden plate of a map of the country showing locations of RBAF camps in all four districts, was presented to His Majesty by the Commander of RBAF.

After receiving the pasambah, His Majesty received greetings from officers and wives of the RBAF.

His Majesty then consented to sign the guest book at the foyer before departing to the ICC to officiate the opening of the Brunei Darussalam International Defence Exhibition and Forum 2007 or Bridex 2007.

More tie-ups for Indonesia, Brunei

Izam Said Ya'akub

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

01-Jun-07

MORE Bruneian officers of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and Indonesian officers of Tentera Nasional Indonesia will be participating in exchanges that look to enhance capabilities for both armed forces.

This, according to Indonesia's Secretary General of Defence Major General Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in an interview on the sidelines of the first Brunei Darussalam International Defence Exhibition (Bridex).

He said Indonesia will be looking to learn from Brunei Darussalam's progress in managing a balanced scorecard and will be aiming to send more Indonesian officers for future joint exercises.

Early this year RBAF and the Indonesian Air Force took part in one such bilateral exercise in Banjarmasin, Kalimantan.

"Indonesia will still place emphasis on reinforcing the existing military-to-military relationship between Indonesia and Brunei," he added. "However this will not focus on border exercises but to enhance the skill of professionalism."

Cooperation between the two countries' forces will also focus on technology, the Indonesian official said.

Indonesia has sent officers to Brunei Darussalam since last year, and continues to look at the relevant priorities for both countries and assess various activities which can allow the two Asean nations to progress together.

Private sector seen to play key role in defence industries

Izam Said Ya'akub

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

01-Jun-07

BRUNEI Darussalam's Ministry of Defence will be looking at creative solutions that will allow it to reduce the economic burden of high cost defence investments, while meeting the nation's security priorities.

Business partnerships with the private sector will form part of future strategies to equip the sultanate with cutting edge defence technology while creating industries and jobs that will contribute to economic expansion, according to a speech by Deputy Minister of Defence Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar.

"I have always believed that business initiates a desirable economic cycle," he said in his keynote address at yesterday's Bridex Forum. "It initiates new enterprises, new jobs and new skills. Successful businesses raise income levels and that brings on growth and productivity."

The defence official spoke on the potential contribution of private sector partners in the development of Brunei's defence-related industries as he highlighted the need for the sultanate to balance the acquisition of sophisticated technology with concerns over fiscal prudence.

In his keynote address, he said Brunei needs to harness cutting edge technology which the global defence industry has to offer.

However, the deputy minister was quick to point out that for a small country like Brunei Darussalam, technology also poses a unique problem for the sultanate.

"Technology is not cheap. As a small country with finite resources, we do not have the capacity to exploit the full potential of technology to meet our defence and security needs."

Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad Yasmin added that to do so would mean investing excessively and unreasonably in defence.

"The costs to own and run high tech platforms such as fighter aircraft and warships are very prohibitive that it can easily consume a large portion of the national budget, which would result in an uneven budget appropriation. We all know that as a developing nation we have to balance our development priorities."

The Royal Brunei Armed Forces faces a wide spectrum of security challenges which include the reinforcement of the sultanate's border, protecting national maritime interests and enhancing the nation's capacity to counter terrorism.

It has taken part in international peace and humanitarian operations, with Brunei's finest participating in peacekeeping and observation missions in Cambodia and the Philippines, and contributed in monitoring and humanitarian assistance operations in Indonesia.

All this whilst maintaining peace and stability in Brunei Darussalam.

Whilst stern challenges face the Ministry of Defence in achieving its objectives, the need to overcome the obstacles has inevitably opened the door of opportunity for Brunei Darussalam's private sector.

The private sector is expected to step up and help deliver the desired results for developments across the board. The spin offs of such a successful partnership between the private and public sectors will be a boon to Brunei Darussalam in providing new jobs, new skills and giving the sultanate added growth and productivity.

"Through this (partnership) we hope to see better value for money and that the smallest of public expenditure will give back the maximum benefit to the public." said the deputy minister.

The forum looks to provide an environment for organisations within the defence industry to create synergies and work closely in collaborations with the public sector.

Thrills at RBAF's 46th anniversary celebration

By Aemy Azlena and Kartika Rahman
Photos by Azrol Azmi, James Kon and Yusrin Junaidi

The atmosphere was cheerful, and excitement filled the air as crowds gathered early yesterday morning hours at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to watch the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) as they showcased their skills in celebration of the 46th RBAF Day.

The theme of the 46th Anniversary, "Iltizam Memperkasa Pertahanan Negara", represents the continuous commitment of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in raising standards and abilities in terms of assets and human resources. The RBAF is always ready to defend the peace of the country, and remains concerned about global safety and harmony, especially in the region.

One of the highlights of the event was the aerial arrival of soldiers by parachute with Panji-Panji (flags) flowing behind them as they dove from a fleet of helicopters and landed in the stadium. It was an electrifying sight for the audience, as the soldiers appeared to fall at an alarmingly fast rate before they managed to pull up at the last moment to land with ease. It was truly a wondrous feat, which drew a massive round of applause and cheers from the crowd.

At the cry of "ABDB Maju!" ("ABDB Charge!") from the speakers, ranks of soldiers poured out from four different entrances to create two formations and conducted a demonstration of their fighting abilities, moves and take-down techniques in armed and unarmed combat.

The most impressive aspect of the show was their total synchronisation of the movements, and it was especially apparent when the soldiers bore arms and "defeated" their opponents.

During the show, the RBAF personnel on the field formed the numerals "4" and "6" to signify the 46th Anniversary of the armed forces.

For the grand finale, a column of soldiers marched onto the field in perfect synchronisation and arranged themselves in ranks before they started singing "Pahlawan Bangsaku" or "My Nation's Warriors", which struck a positive chord with the crowd who sang along, while a display of pyrotechnics in red and yellow smoke in the background added to the fervour.

This year's RBAF celebration saw a plethora of activities hosted by the RBAF that emphasised qualities of leadership and community service. Such activities include a Futsal Carnival that drew encouraging support, and a blood donation drive throughout the month of May, which managed to collect donations of up to 460 litres.

This year's RBAF logo includes the RBAF symbol to show their responsibilities towards defending the freedom and sovereignty of the monarchy, the country and its religion. The flag colours of RBAF, the map of Brunei in the background, the number "46" in Arabic and Roman numerals highlight the 46th anniversary of the RBAF. The theme of the ABDB anniversary is also included at the bottom of the logo, "Iltizam Memperkasa Pertahanan Negara", which is also written in Bahasa Melayu and Arabic to highlight its importance to the ABDB.
