Snow falls on Baghdad for first time in memory

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Snow fell on Baghdad on Friday for the firsttime in memory, and delighted residents declared it an omen of peace.

"It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad," said 60-year-oldHassan Zahar. "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at thefaces of all the people, they were astonished," he said.
"A few minutes ago, I was covered with snowflakes. In my hair, on myshoulders. I invite all the people to enjoy peace, because the snowmeans peace," he said.

Traffic policeman Murtadha Fadhil, huddling under a balcony to keep dry, declared the snow "a new sign of the new Iraq."

"It's a sign of hope. We hope Iraqis will purify their hearts and politicians will work for the prosperity of all Iraqis."

The streets of the capital were largely empty as big, thick, wetflakes fell on Friday morning, a weekend day in Iraq. The temperaturehovered around freezing and the snow mostly melted into grey puddleswhen it hit the ground.

But it was still lovely, said Mohanned Rahim, a baker: "This snow will bring pleasure to the people of Iraq. It's beautiful!"

Heavy Snow in Jerusalem

hi semua, saye nak kongsi satu berita yg mungkin menggemparkan le jugak, sampai kuar headlines, Jerusalem dilanda ribut salji yg sunggoh aneh! tak pnah setebal ni salji turun di Baitulmaqdis, salunyer salji turun 2 kali dlm musim sejuk, tu pun salji tak sempat nak berkumpul n bertimbun timbun, tapi semalam, salji turun dgn lebatnyer sampai banyak bandaraya di seluruh timur tengah tergendala, dari Israel ke Lebanon, Jordan dan Syria, semua terlibat dgn salji yg aneh ni.

mungkin ade sesape boleh jelaskan fenomena aneh nih? dr segi saintifik, mungkin salji aneh ni mmg sebenarnyer boleh berlaku dlm 100 tahun ke, 20 tahon ke, atau pe pe ke, ahaks....as for me, mmg aneh btol salji tebal turun di Jerusalem, salunyer panas gersang je tanah di Jerusalem tu...huhu

source boleh rujuk ke

JERUSALEM - A rare snowstorm swept the Middle East on Wednesday, blanketing parts of the Holy Land in white, shutting schools and sending excited children into the streets for snowball fights.

The weather in Jerusalem topped local newscasts, eclipsing a government report on Israel's 2006 war in Lebanon.
Men in long Arab robes pelted each other with snowballs in the Jordanian capital, Amman, and the West Bank city of Ramallah, seat of the Palestinian government, came to a standstill.

"I'm originally from Gaza where snow never falls," said Bothaina Smairi, 28, who was out in Ramallah taking photographs. "The white snow is covering the old world and I feel like I am in a new world where everything is white, clean, and beautiful."
Jerusalem's Old City was coated in white. A few ultra-Orthodox Jews, wearing plastic bags over their hats to keep them dry, prayed at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.

Snow falls in Jerusalem once or twice each winter, but temperatures rarely drop low enough for it to stick. The Israeli weather service said up to 8 inches of snow fell in the city.

By late morning, the snow changed to rain, turning the city into a slushy mess. But forecasters said temperatures were expected to drop, and the snow would continue through Thursday morning.

Heavy snow also was reported in the Golan Heights and the northern Israeli town of Safed, and throughout the West Bank.
In Ramallah, residents were surprised to see snow when they awoke. For some, it was their first time.

"I am just astonished with the snow. When I saw the snow this morning, I felt happy, my heart was laughing," said Mary Zabaro, 17.

In Amman, where a foot of snow fell, children used inflatable tubes as sleds. Some roads were temporarily closed.
Snow covered most mountain villages and blocked roads in Lebanon. The storm disrupted power supplies in most Lebanese towns and villages, exacerbating existing power cuts. Parts of the Beirut-Damascus highway were closed.
Temperatures in Syria dipped below freezing and snow blanketed the hills overlooking the capital, Damascus.

- Agensi

Hari tu...

MADRID has been buried in 50cm of snow as Storm Filomena left thousands trapped in their cars and airport passengers stranded.
The freak blizzard blanketed swathes of Spain with driving snow bringing traffic to a grinding halt and grounding dozens of flights.

Thousands of drivers have been left trapped in their cars

Dozens of flights were grounded as runways became unusable
In the capital, a red weather alert was issued for the first time and troops were ordered into action to rescue those trapped in drifts.
"We continue the rescue of vehicles on the A4, A5, M40 and M607," tweeted the Unit for Military Emergencies, which deployed 147 soldiers.

The national weather agency warned some regions would be hit by more than 24 hours of snowfall due to the odd combination of cold air over the Iberian Peninsula and the arrival of the warmer Filomena from the south.

It said that up to 20cm of snow could accumulate in large parts of the country but by this morning the build-up had already reached more than 50cm in some urban areas.

The storm is expected to move north east throughout today, the agency said.
Carlos Novillo, head of the Madrid emergency agency, revealed more than 1,000 vehicles had become trapped, mostly on the city's ring road and the main motorway which leads from the capital to the south.

"The situation remains of high risk. This is a very complex phenomenon and a critical situation," he warned this morning in a message posted on social media.

"We ask all those who remain trapped to be patient, we will get to you," he added.
Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos added: “We are in the grip of an historic storm and obviously it’s had a huge knock-on effect on transport.

Airport operator AENA said that the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas International Airport - the main gateway in and out of the country - would remain closed throughout today.
The shutdown came after the monster blizzard foiled machines and workers trying to keep the runways clear of snow.

All trains into and out of Madrid, both commuter routes and long-distance passenger trains, as well as railway lines between the south and the northeast of the country, were suspended, railway operator Renfe said.

The storm had also caused serious disruptions or closed altogether over 430 roads by Saturday morning, according to Spain's transit authorities, which urged people to stay indoors and avoid all non-essential travel.

Municipal bus services Madrid's rubbish collection services were also suspended.
The wintry weather even hit the country's football league, with some of the La Liga top teams unable to travel for games.

A red weather alert was issued in multiple regions
A flight to Madrid carrying players of the current leader in the championship, Athletic Bilbao, had to turn back, while the second-place Real Madrid team was unable to take off for its match against Osasuna.

Ten provinces across the country were on red alert this morning/yesterday morning (SAT), 19 on orange alert and more than 400 roads were affected.
However, some took advantage of the drifts to SKI through the streets of the Spanish capital.

THE River Thames has frozen over for the first time in 60 years as the Beast from the East 2 sees temperatures plummet.

The "extreme freeze" has sent the mercury tumbling with more heavy snow on the way.

Temperatures in London dropped to -2C as Storm Darcy - dubbed "The Beast of the East 2" - batters Britain with a sub-zero cold snap.

As a result of the bitter chill from the Baltic, a huge section of the Thames froze over at Teddington, south west London on Thursday.

The last time the river completely froze over was in January 1963 which saw the coldest winter for more than 200 years.

It brought blizzards, snow drifts and temperatures of -20C and even saw some parts of the sea freeze over.

The UK experienced the coldest February night for 25 years on Wednesday, with temperatures falling to below -20C in some areas.

Braemar, Scotland, saw the mercury fall to -23C in the early hours - the coldest temperature recorded in the UK since the -27C which hit Altnaharra in Scotland in December 1995.

A video taken in the village of Boat of Garten, near to Braemar, showed a cup of hot water instantly turning to ice when thrown into the air.

And a picture posted by Scot Rail showed large blocks of ice had formed underneath one of its high-speed trains.

Fifteen weather stations recorded their lowest temperatures ever for February.

The mercury also registered freezing temperatures in the Scottish Highlands, with -21.3C in Kinbrace and -18.2 in Strathallan.

The lowest temperature recorded in England and Wales was at Ravensworth, in north Yorkshire, which dropped to -13.1C.

FREEZING COLD

Two more days of heavy snow are set to spark power cuts and travel chaos.

Met Office weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place for today and Saturday.

There is a chance that other services - such as mobile phone coverage - may be disrupted, forecasters said.

With four different yellow warnings for snow and ice across the country, roads and railways could be affected, with journeys taking longer than usual.

There is also a risk that "some rural communities could become cut off", the Met Office warned.

Oli Claydon, a spokesman for the Met Office, said that some of the records in temperatures had been broken by "quite some way".

He added: "Usually you'd expect records to be broken by point such-and-such of a degree but here we're looking at big differences."

Scattered yellow weather warnings remain in place for parts of Scotland and northern England until Saturday.

Mr Claydon continued: "There's still a couple of days of cold conditions to get through and a little bit more snow in parts of Scotland but the trend is that the weekend is going to herald a change to milder conditions."

He warned that there was still a chance of freezing rain on Sunday and said the Met Office may issue a warning for ice, which would bring "significant hazards".

It comes after councils across England urged people to take "extra care" in the dangerous conditions and several were forced to briefly suspend waste collection services.

Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt, took part in a House of Commons debate wearing a sling, hours after breaking his arm whilst jogging.

The chairman of the Health and Social Care Committee told MPs he had spent the morning at the Royal Surrey County Hospital after slipping in the icy conditions.

Health chiefs have also issued a cold weather alert for the whole of Britain, saying the chill could have "a serious impact on health".

Dr Owen Landeg, Group Leader, Extreme Events and Health Protection at Public Health England, warned: "Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with heart and lung problems, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

"So it’s really important during this particularly cold period, to keep checking on frail or older neighbours or relatives, especially those living alone or who have serious illnesses."

The NHS said that, despite the tough conditions, many vaccination centres have remained open, and any missed appointments will be rescheduled.
