City clinch Sukha signing

Fri 31 Aug 2007

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Suree Sukha, according to owner Thaksin Shinawatra's lawyer.

The Thailand full-back, who recently shone for his country in the AFC Asian Cup in July, is one of three Thai players currently on trial at City.

Thaksin has stressed since taking over the club that he is keen to bring Thai players to the Barclays Premier League, and should Suree complete the move, he will become the first player from his country to play in England's top flight.

"Suree will be the first Thai player to play in the Premier League. His work permit is now being processed," confirmed lawyer Noppadon Pattama.

Thailand's national team manager, Chanvit Polchovin, who recently returned to Thailand after staying with the players in Manchester, admitted the move will be a great boost for Thai football.

"It is a good news and a great boost for Thai players who dream of playing in the Premiership," he said. "To be part of the first team for the Thai player is a great honour for him. But please don't expect too much. He is unlikely to go straight into the first team line-up."

Eriksson ready to ink Suree deal

(November 13, 2007)

Thailand international Suree Sukha is set to become the first Thai player to sign for an English Premiership club when Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson arrives here later this week, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) said yesterday.

FAT secretary-general Ong-Arj Kosinkar said the Swede will be here on Friday to ink a deal with the full-back.

Eriksson is also interested in Teerasil Dangda and Kiatprawut Saiwaew, who were at City on trial recently with Suree.
Suree was initially denied a work permit by Britain's Home Office but FAT president Worawi Makudi said he had talked to Premier League chief Richard Scudamore
The official has promised to help sort out any problems.
According to the FAT chief, striker Teerasil and defender Kiatprawut could also be signed by City, who are owned by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Worawi said City had agreed to help football development in Thailand and the FAT would send three young players to train at the English club next year as part of the agreement.

A press conference will be held at the Conrad hotel on Friday when Eriksson is expected to sign Suree and announce the co-operation agreement.

Eriksson will also visit China as part of a worldwide expansion programme which includes setting up academies in Asia.

''We plan to have academies all over the world,'' Eriksson was quoted as saying in the English press.

''The plan is to have the first ones opening in Thailand and China.''

FOOTBALL >Malaysia's loss is Canaries' gain

By RIZAL HASHIM

THE man who could have been employed as the nation's first foreign hitman, has taken his shooting boots to France.
Christian Bekamenga, who made Malaysia his adopted country but left Seremban in late 2006 despite proposals to make him a naturalised Malaysian, was unveiled as Nantes' new signing on March 18.

Given the No 20 jersey by the French Second Division outfit who produced Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps, Christian Karembeu and Jose Toure, to name a few, the Cameroon international rejected overtures from French giants Marseille, Metz and a German second division club to try his luck with the Canaries.

Speaking to Nantes' official website www.fcna.fr, Bekamenga, who kept Negri Sembilan Naza fans spellbound with his net-busting skills from 2005 to 2006, said he was happy to finally land a deal with the club after obtaining a working visa.

"Nantes is the team in my heart.
I was born in the same district as Solomon Olembe (Cameroon international) ," said Bekamenga, who is happy to have settled visa problems which threatened to throw a spanner into his transfer from Indonesian club Persib Bandung.

Asked the difference between the game in Asia and Europe, Bekamenga said the format and structure of competition were different.

"The players in Asia are smaller but much faster. In general, the level is slightly lower than the standard of the average second division side in Europe.

"But in France, in particular, I will have to confront bigger and more physical defenders." Voted Malaysia's Most Popular Foreign player in 2006, Bekamenga spent two seasons in Seremban.

However, weeks after netting Negri Sembilan's solitary goal in the 2006 Malaysia Cup final, Bekamenga left for Indonesia.

The move came as a surprise, especially as the deal was sealed weeks after he named his daughter after local pop icon, Siti Nurhaliza.

There was even talk that Bekamenga, who was yet to called up by Cameroon then, would be made a naturalised citizen if the FA of Malaysia and the relevant authorities were serious in employing imported players to don Malaysian colours.

All he had to do was complete his two-year stay in Seremban, apply for a citizenship, seek the world's governing body FIFA's endorsement on his naturalised status and the possibility of Bekamenga partnering Safee Sali as Malaysia's frontmen on the international stage was as clear as Zinedine Zidane's head-butt on Marco Materazzi.

According to FIFA rules, players must have a 'clear connection to that country' if they wished to wear the colours of a nation other than the one of their birth. The rules also state a player must either have lived in a country for at least two years, or have a parent or grandparent, who was born there.

Unfortunately, traditionalists scoffed at the idea, describing the move as violating the spirit of international competition and wiping the Malaysian identity out of the national team.

And we are all the poorer for it.

Chelsea trial Malaysian starlets

Stamford Bridge stint for young duo

Malaysian youngsters Badrul Bakhtiar and Bunyamin Umar are set for a two-week trial with Chelsea.

The two 20-year-olds are considered Malaysia's brightest talents and left for London on Friday to train with the Premier League side.

Both are youth internationals for Malaysia and impressed during the Champions Youth Cup in 2007, an Under-19 tournament which featured national and club teams like Malaysia, Juventus, Milan and eventual winners Manchester United.

Bunyamin captained the Malaysian team which held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw in the group stages, and Badrul was a standout striker throughout the tournament.

The duo will now hope to impress manager Avram Grant in order to earn long-term deals at Stamford Bridge.
