Hydrangea By Courtney Ramirez

Hydrangea is actually a name for an entire genus of 75 species of flowering plants, and they are native to southern and eastern Asia, North and South America. Most hydrangeas grow in shrubs, but there are also varieties that grow as small trees.

Color Changing Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are known for their large flower heads and dramatic presentation. These flowers typically bloom midsummer and come in a variety of colors, such as white, pink, red and even blue. Adding nutrients to the soil can alter the color of the bloom, giving growers a measure of control in their hydrangea plants. Controlling the color of the blooms is easiest when the plant is in a container because it is easier to change the level of pH in the soil.

Hydrangeas that are in the ground will often change color on their own and it is not uncommon to see several different colors of flower heads on one shrub or tree. The easiest color transformation is from pink to blue. It requires adding aluminum to the soil. Conversely, taking away aluminum from the soil will create blue blooms. However, the grower cannot change white hydrangeas to pink or blue.

Planting Hydrangeas By Courtney Ramirez

Hydrangeas are popular for their beautiful blooms, but are also sought after because they are relatively easy to plant and grow. They survive well in areas that have morning sun and afternoon shade; however, they do not do well in heavy shade. When planting hydrangeas, makes sure they are in an area that gets lots of moisture. During the first year of growth, hydrangeas will need supplemental moisture, especially in areas that are prone to hot climates and drought. The roots of hydrangeas are drawn to moisture and the extra hydration is necessary for the plant to take root.

Hydrangea Pruning Tips

Pruning hydrangeas is not necessary unless they are very old or overgrown. There are two recommended methods for pruning. The first method is to prune in the summer before the month of August. The reason being is that by August, most plants have set their bloom buds for the next year. Pruning any time after July will result in fewer blooms the next summer. It is recommended that a grower trim only the blooms on 搊ld wood,

Hydrangea Colour and the Soil

The acidity of your soil will affect the colour of blue, pink and mauve hydrangeas. Acid soil will give blue flowers, neutral to alkaline soil will give pink flowers. If your hydrangea is white it will always be white regardless of the soil.

The blue colour comes from hydrangeas which take up aluminium. So the secret to making your hydrangeas blue on soil which is not naturally acid is to add aluminium sulphate to the soil. Don't do this every year though, it can cause problems. Alternate aluminium sulfate one year with sequesterd iron the next. There are lots of hydrangea colourants on the market. Be aware though, to get the bluest booms you really need naturally acid soil, the pH should be between 4.5 to 5.0.

CARE OF HYDRANGEAS

Hydrangeas like to be kept evenly moist at all times, this is the major factor in producing good specimens. They also like a well-drained soil. So lots of mulch around the base of the plant but not touching it is very beneficial.

If the plant is on good soil then very little feeding is required if they are well-mulched. If the soil is sandy and lacks nutrients, a twice yearly (early spring and mid-summer) feed with some liquid tomato feed will satisfy their needs. Don't use a feed rich in nitrogen because nitrogen will encourage leaf growth at the expense of flower growth.
