All About Fall Out Boy & Panic! at the disco

The four members of Chicago's Fall Out Boy came together in suburban Wilmette around 2000. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Peter Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joseph Trohman had all been in and out of various units connected to Chicago's underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the furiously political metal-core outfit whose brief output was both a rallying point and sticking point within the hardcore community. As Fall Out Boy, the quartet used the unbridled intensity of hardcore as a foundation for melody-drenched pop-punk with a heavy debt to the emo scene. They debuted with a self-released demo in 2001, following it up in May 2002 with a split LP on Uprising that also featured Project Rocket. The band returned on the label in January with the mini-LP Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girl, but by this point a bidding war of sorts was already in full swing. Fall Out Boy eventually signed a deal with Gainesville, FL's Fueled by Ramen, the label co-owned by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Balzano, but also received an advance from Island Records to record their proper debut. The advance came with a right of first refusal for Island on Fall Out Boy's next album, but it also financed the recording of Take This to Your Grave, which occurred at Butch Vig's Smart Studios compound in Madison, WI, with Sean O'Keefe (Lucky Boys Confusion, Motion City Soundtrack) at the helm. Grave appeared in May 2003, and Fall Out Boy garnered positive reviews for its gigs at South by Southwest and numerous tour appearances. The ambitious From Under the Cork Tree followed in spring 2005, and Fall Out Boy headed out on tour again. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Mainstream success
The band landed its first success in 2003 with the album Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, released on Fueled By Ramen,[3] with singles such as "Pretty In Punk" and "Short, Fast, And Loud" receiving airplay on FUSE and mtvU. That same year, they signed with Island Records, and on May 3, 2005, released their major label debut From Under The Cork Tree,[3] which debuted on the Billboard charts at #9, selling over 70,000 copies in its first week. Their breakout single "Sugar, We're Goin' Down," peaked at #8 on the Billboard "Hot 100" charts and reached #1 on MTV's TRL, where the video was retired. The video also won the MTV2 Award at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. The band was nominated for "Best New Artist" at the 2006 Grammy Awards.
Between the releases of Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girl and From Under The Cork Tree, they released two other albums; Take This To Your Grave and My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Tounge. Take This To Your Grave has had singles such as "Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy?)" and "Saturday". My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Tounge has had singles such as "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" and "It's Not A Side Effect Of The Cocaine, I Am Thinking It Must Be Love."
Fall Out Boy have had a number of their tracks, including "A Little Less Than Sixteen Candles, A Little More 'Touch Me'" and "Dance, Dance," performed by the Angry String Orchestra on the album String Quartet Tribute to Fall Out Boy.
While Patrick Stump is the lead singer, Wentz (the oldest and most outgoing of the quartet) tends to take on the traditional role of "frontman" by being the bands chief spokesman and creating the banter on stage. Stump is quoted at saying "With Pete, I get to be the anti-frontman." |
