Gawai Dayak is traditionally a time when we give thanks for an abundant harvest and blessings that we have received.

It is also a time for merry making.

However, just like all the other festivals that occurred over the past two years, Gawai Dayak will have to be celebrated just within our own households as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

Unlike in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic affected mainly the urban areas in Sarawak, this year the virus has spread to most of the rural areas.

The number of longhouses that had to be placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) had also increased.
The number of clusters in Sarawak had also increased. The majority of these clusters occurred due to poor compliance with current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Among the contributing factors for these clusters are social gathering, birthday celebrations, wedding events, funerals, cock-fighting events and inter-district movement. In each cluster, the number of cases involved could be up to a few hundreds.

In the past few months, we have seen a surge of COVID-19 cases which was higher than last year during the same period. There were 152 deaths in the period of January to April 2021. In addition, in the last few weeks Sarawak had recorded between 300 to 600 cases per day.

Most hospital beds that were meant to be used for general illnesses have to be converted and used for COVID-19 cases. Beds in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) are be insufficient to cope with the increased number of cases.

The quarantine centres are also insufficient.

Thus, for the coming Gawai, we appeal to everyone to adhere to the following:
a)do not go back to your villages or long houses if you are staying in town, for example;
b)avoid Gawai visiting (ngabang);
c) celebrate Gawai with family members only in the same household, or room (bilik);
d) avoid gathering in common area or ruai;
e) do not organise cock-fighting events; and
f) follow the SOPs that were announced by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In other words, please stay at home and do not make any inter-district movements.

By limiting our movements during this Gawai celebration, we can help to reduce the risks of COVID-19 transmission. The prevention and control of COVID-19 is the responsibility of the whole community and not only government agencies alone. Everyone should be responsible for their own health and let us work together to prevent this disease from spreading further.

'Iboh balit kampung Gawai kelak'
