Kuala Lumpur is ranked the Most Affordable City for Students in a QS survey which analysed 125 cities and responses from 18,000 international students worldwide.

The 10 most affordable cities for students
As the cost of going to university rises in the UK, many British students are considering studying abroad to gain a degree and dodge a mountain of debt. Higher education data experts QS have compiled a list of the world’s most affordable cities for students, based on tuition fees and general living expenses. All cities listed are home to at least two universities.

1. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Malaysia might not be the first place you think of when you consider studying abroad. But with tuition fees that are around a quarter of those in the UK, and a cost of living that’s about half, it’s a great choice for those looking to avoid drowning in debt while gaining a degree. Where to study:The University of Malaya is popular with international students, and Kuala Lumpur is also home to international branches of institutions such as Monash University, Australia, which means students can gain a degree with the same prestige for a fraction of the price.

2. Warsaw, Poland
Only a few hundred British students are currently studying in Poland, but that might be about to change. The Polish capital strikes the perfect balance between affordable tuition fees – around £2,300 a year, and day-to-day living costs, which are very low by European standards. You’ll be able to find a pint of beer for less than a pound, while a Big Mac will set you back about £1.60. Where to study: The University of Warsaw runs a number of English language courses and ranks well on an international stage.

3. Hsinchu, Taiwan
For the brave student looking for something a bit different, why not Taiwan? The country has two entries on this list, and Hsinchu should appeal to students who prefer a laid-back city with plenty of history. Where to study: National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University are both very international-student friendly.

4. Berlin, Germany
Where better to spend your student years than in Europe’s coolest city? Prices have been rising in recent years, but it’s still very affordable, and makes the list because tuition fees in Germany are completely free for students from within the EU. Where to study: The Free University of Berlin is a good starting point; it’s ranked well internationally, and if you need any other incentive, the clue is in the name.

5. Taipei, Taiwan
The second Taiwan cities on the list, Taiwan’s capital provides a bustling modern city life, at a faster pace than Hsinchu. Where to study: The National Taiwan University can often be found in the top 100 of world university rankings, ahead of most UK institutions. Tuition fees are set at around £2,500 a year.

6. Munich, Germany
The Bavarian city of Munich isn’t quite as cheap to live in as Berlin, but tuition fees are still free for students from the EU. Where to study: The Technical University of Munich is internationally renowned and one of the best there is for science subjects.

7. Vienna, Austria
It would be a stretch to claim that Vienna is a cheap city to live in, but living costs are reasonable and the quality of life is high. It’s tuition fees are what earns it a place in this list; free for students from within the EU, and negligable for everyone else. Where to study: Both theUniversity of Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology are worth a look – they are Austria’s top ranked universities and both attract a large number of international students.

8. Mexico City, Mexico
Tuition fees in Mexico are a little higher than debt-averse students might like, at just under £4,000 a year. But day-to-day life is cheap, and Mexico City boasts great street food, a diverse nightlife and a fascinating history. Where to study: The National Autonomous University of Mexico is rates pretty well in world league tables, and is definitely worth a look if art and design is your thing.

9. Valencia, Spain
Barcelona would probably be the first city that students looking to study in Spain would consider, but Valencia has significantly lower tuition fees (just over £1,000 a year), and the cost of living is cheaper too. Where to study: The Polytechnic University of Valenciaisn’t exactly Oxford, but it ranks very well among newer universities.

10. Toulouse, France
Students with their heart set on study in Paris should perhaps have a rethink: Toulouse has plently of the romance, is much cheaper, and will cost you just a few hundred pounds in tuition fees. Where to study: The Paul Sabatier University has a student population that is around half international, and ranks particularly well for its science courses.
