Meghan Markle baby birth: 50 days that could bring down Duchess
For months, Meghan worked tirelessly to keep the Queen and other senior royals happy — but now she’s playing a dangerous game.
Fifty days. On Wednesday, that will be how long it has been since Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex popped on her favourite Aquazurra heels and strode out her front door to undertake an official engagement.
In the days, weeks, and very nearly months, since then, we have waited, oh so patiently waited, for any baby news. There have been scant crumbs and those we have had have been about what won’t be happening: There won’t be the usual Lindo Wing media melee and it seems likely the couple won’t have a hospital birth (medical issues notwithstanding).
But that is it. Zero. Nothing. Nada.
Instead, we find ourselves stuck in a nearly total information void. And out of that, interestingly, one thing has started to become apparent — Meghan is failing a significant royal KPI.
Being royal comes means being saddled with capital-d Duty until your dying day. And a key element of that duty is public visibility, ie, maintaining some semblance of connection with the adoring masses.
Diana’s longtime private secretary Patrick Jephson writes in The Meghan Factor, “for royal people, duty is not what they do — it is what they live”.
“The key question for anyone finding themselves owner of a royal title is how best to discharge that duty, because any perceived sign of reluctance or ignorance where duty is concerned will eventually be noticed,” Jephson writes.
And one of those pesky duties is staying resolutely in the public gaze, the importance of which seems to be something that the Duchess of Cambridge intrinsically understands.
Way back in 2012, Kate gamely fronted the cameras after being discharged from hospital for suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. Since then, she has regularly shared images of each of her children and very carefully and moderately maintained her family’s exposure.
Having to let millions, if not billions, of people into your kids’ world might sound unpleasant, verging on the downright repugnant, but that’s part of the job description. Getting that hard-won HRH means you can never fully abscond from the public stage.
In the months before the start of her maternity leave, Megs did her absolute darnedest to, as Jephson says, “discharge that duty”. She trooped along to myriad charity events, permanently clad in a six-figure wardrobe of couture creations and charmed small children and government bureaucrats all the way from Dublin to Dubbo. Ten points!
Now all that is at risk of being lost by this current period of royal silence.
Meghan has opted to spend more than six weeks essentially sequestered away behind high hedges surrounded by a retinue of bodyguards and an implacable Palace press apparatus keeping firmly schtum.
The public is an unequivocally fickle creature. The total dearth of any news will at some stage start erode goodwill and it could start to look like she is shirking one particular irksome duty. Obscurity and remoteness are not part of the Royal Commandments.
As Jephson argues, undermining her perceived authenticity as a warm and charming person is an incredibly dangerous move.
“If the public suspect that the attractive characters they see on screen aren’t really as nice as they seem but are, in fact, the creation of clever news managers, the inclination to give them the benefit of the doubt … will quickly evaporate,” he writes.
I’m not suggesting Meghan should spend hours having her hair blow dried and wedge herself into a designer frock so she can spend an excruciating morning putting up with reporters’ questions about the state of her uterus. I’m thinking more along the lines of she and Hazza sharing a simple Instagram post that says something like: “Meghan is feeling well and counting down the hours until the baby arrives. In the meantime, we appreciate the good wishes and are looking forward to sharing the good news with everyone.”
If there was a candid, warm snap of the parents-to-be to boot, then all the better!
Basically, it is a question of offering some skerrick of connection with the millions of people who are deeply invested in the Duchess’s wellbeing and about showing s hint of gratitude at the global groundswell of caring.
May 19 marks one full year since Meghan signed on for this particular gig and you can’t only do the bits of a job that you really like (and which involve tiaras). Being part of the royal family is a complicated, uncompromising role with little room for error.
It’s time to get on the ‘Gram and get to work, Mr and Mrs Sussex.
