Rooney ready for action
Wayne Rooney is set to pester his way into Sir Alex Ferguson's pre-season plans ahead of schedule.

The 20-year-old striker, who hasn't been in competitive action since being sent off in England's World Cup defeat to Portugal, is back in training and is itching to play a part in United's remaining friendlies.

The Reds continue their pre-season with games against Preston (July 29) and Macclesfield (July 31) and Sir Alex is set to pitch Rooney into action in the latter game.

"Rooney is gasping for a game," said Sir Alex. "He is pestering the bloody life out of me. So I'll probably play him against Macclesfield. Edwin van der Sar is looking for a game - we'll look at the situation.

"[Against Preston] Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John O'Shea will be back. I may give one of the main players half an hour and the ones who are looking ahead of the rest, the likes of Rio Ferdinand, something like that but I'll have a good look

Fortune completes Trotters move
Quinton Fortune has completed his move to Bolton Wanderers.

The South African utility man, who was released by United this summer, has signed a one year deal at the Reebok Stadium.

The 29-year-old made 126 appearances for United, scoring 11 goals, after joining from Atletico Madrid in 1999.

Various injuries dogged his Reds career, and he failed to make a single appearance last season due to a persistent knee calcification problem.

Everyone at Manchester United wishes Quinton the very best of luck at his new club.

Jol plots to hijack Van

TOTTENHAM have moved to hijack Ruud van Nistelrooy? switch to Real Madrid by using Michael Carrick as bait.

Spurs manager Martin Jol wants the Manchester United striker PLUS around ?10million in cash for Carrick.

Last night, it emerged the England midfielder had rejected a ?45,000-a-week deal to stay at White Hart Lane.

And Tottenham are now willing to sell him in a bid to pip Real to Van Nistelrooy.

The Spanish giants have already responded to Spurs? interest by making an increased offer of ?10.25m for the 30-year-old Dutchman.

But that still falls well short of United? ?15m valuation and Tottenham have a tempting alternative for Old Trafford chief Alex Ferguson.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is fiercely ambitious and will offload Carrick, 25 tomorrow, in return for a hitman who can guarantee 20 goals a season.

It was Tottenham? failure to take their chances towards the end of the last campaign that cost them a Champions League place.

But even if they fail to capture Van Nistelrooy, Carrick looks likely to move.

He is one of the hottest properties in the Premiership and Arsenal are almost certain to step in with an offer.

Jermain: I'll kick Carrick
JERMAIN DEFOE is prepared to give Michael Carrick a good kicking to keep him at Spurs.

Alex Ferguson wants England midfielder Carrick, 25 tomorrow, at Manchester United.

But Tottenham striker Defoe, 23, will try anything to keep his pal at White Hart Lane and help the North Londoners push for Champions League football.

Defoe joked: ?? trying to injure him so he can? move!

?ichael is one of the best players around in his position and what he did for us last season was unbelievable.

?e?e mates and I want him to stay. Michael? a great player who is not desperate to leave because he is at a great club.?

PAUL PARKER has told Manchester United fans: Don't worry about losing Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Wantaway striker Van Nistelrooy is a target for Spanish giants Real Madrid after falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson last season.

But Parker, who played under Ferguson at Old Trafford from 1991 to 1996, believes the Dutchman will fail to find his best form with another club.

The 42-year-old ex-England defender said: "Ruud scored a lot of goals in the first half of last season but never looked like he was going to find the net in the latter stages.

"He wasn't involved in the general play, he didn't look capable of making a goal on his own and he didn't appear to have any energy or desire.

"When things aren't going right for you it's important to show a little bit more and work hard to lift other players.

"You have to do something different to try and get yourself going.

"But Ruud didn't do that. If he didn't score he wasn't bothered. All he was worried about was getting the ball delivered on a plate.

"Of course the goals he contributed will be missed if he leaves.

"But at Manchester United it's all about the team and not individuals.

"Many individual players have left over the years and not too many have come back to haunt the manager."

Parker claims United do not need to buy an established big name to take Van Nistelrooy's place.
And he has urged the Old Trafford faithful to remain patient while Sir Alex searches for an eager young striker.

Parker, a World Cup semi-finalist in 1990, added: "You don't go out and get somebody who can score 25 to 30 goals a season.
"Instead, you find someone who has the potential to score goals and you believe in the players you already have to provide him with opportunities.

"You find someone who wants to make his name by playing for Manchester United.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy did not come to United as somebody who could guarantee 30 goals a season ? he was just a good finisher.

"He improved because the service was better and the players around him were better.

"That's why Ruud became the player he is and scored so many goals.

"A few years ago he could make goals himself. He always worked hard for the team and tackled back.

"But the truth is he simply doesn't do it anymore."
