BTS Makes History As “Dynamite” Lands No. 1 On Billboard’s Hot 100, Achieving Highest Ranking Ever For Korean Act BTS’s “Dynamite” made an explosive debut on Billboard’s Hot 100, taking the top spot!
Billboard has announced the top 10 on its Hot 100 for the week ending in September 5, with the chart ranking the most popular songs in the United States across all genres based on streaming, radio airplay, and sales data.
BTS’s new English-language track “Dynamite” has entered the chart at No. 1! This is the highest ranking on the chart achieved by an all-Korean group.
According to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, “Dynamite” achieved 33.9 million U.S. streams and 300,000 sales in its first week, which ended on August 27. It gained 11.6 million radio airplay audience impressions in the week that ended on August 30.
“Dynamite” reached 265,000 downloads sold in its first week, with its overall first-week total sales of 300,000 including vinyl and cassette physical versions.
“Dynamite” therefore ranks higher than PSY’s “Gangnam Style” that peaked at No. 2 in 2012. Japanese-born Kyu Sakamoto was the first Asian artist to reach No. 1 on the chart, doing so with “Sukiyaki” for three weeks in 1963. Billboard notes that Far*East Movement topped the Hot 100 for three weeks in 2010 with “Like a G6,” and the group’s lineup included two members of Korean heritage at the time.
BTS’s preview title track “ON” debuted on the Hot 100 in March at No. 4, achieving their highest ranking at the time and the highest score for a Korean group.
“Dynamite” also takes No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart this week and No. 3 on the Streaming Songs chart. Billboard will update its website with this week’s charts on September 1.
BTS performed “Dynamite” for the first time on the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30 and swept all the awards they were nominated for, earning four trophies in total including Best Pop. Check out their performance here!
Congratulations to BTS!

Facing my other self ‘PERSONA’
“We didn’t intend to choose disco for our digital single.
We came across the song while working on our new album. When we first heard the demo, the upbeat sound and energy of the track instantly cheered us up.
We wanted ‘Dynamite’ to deliver a message of hope to our fans in these difficult times, so this disco pop genre track felt like the perfect fit.”
“We call this our own recharge project and we hope that it will be able to recharge your own batteries, even if it’s only for a moment.”
