Tactical analysis
Chelsea's biggest problem is how they use strikers Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.
There's no reason why they can't play together - Drogba as the target man and Anelka coming short or making runs beyond him.
But Avram Grant doesn't play them like that - he prefers a lone man up front with two wide men coming in either side of him.
Will he change the system? You wouldn't think so. And the way that Drogba's played against Arsenal in the past should mean that he is the one to start.
Chelsea are usually rock-solid defensively. John Terry is good in the air, Ricardo Carvalho is wonderful on the deck and their midfielders are usually very well organised.
Against Barnsley in the FA Cup and against Spurs in the league in midweek Chelsea looked fragile. They have conceded four goals twice in the league this season and Manchester United have a much better goal difference.
Arsenal will look to exploit that uncertainty between defence and midfield and Chelsea's slight dip in confidence. |

New 08/09 Chelsea Away and Third Shirts Revealed
Away shirt:
A sigh of relief will be heard around the world when football fans learn that Chelsea won抰 be wearing their highlighter inspired shirt next season, but will instead be wearing a more contemporary yellow color without the fluorescent glow. The design of the new shirt is according to the new Adidas template design. The collar, it should be noted, is different than the Chelsea home shirt but consistent with the Chelsea third shirt.
Third shirt:
While Liverpool are supposedly dropping their black third shirt for 2008/2009 and replacing it with green, Chelsea has instead decided to drop its white third shirt and wear black. Again, there are no surprises to the Adidas template design, but I personally much prefer this black one compared to the white shirt that the club currently wears. |

Talking tactics: Chelsea v Arsenal
Call him a killjoy if you want, but you would expect Avram Grant to do his utmost to ensure there is no repeat of the spectacular White Hart Lane goal bonanza.
So, to tighten things up, it would be no surprise if the Chelsea manager went for power and numbers in midfield and changed his side's formation from 4-4-2 to a less adventurous 4-5-1 against Arsenal tomorrow.
The presence of John Obi Mikel - or possibly Claude Makelele - as a midfield anchorman behind Michael Essien and Frank Lampard would give Chelsea's back four added protection and calm things down.
That would give Chelsea an altogether more solid look, because it is crucial that they rediscover the meanness which served them so well under Jose Mourinho. They have to get back to basics and, with John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho together in central defence, there is every chance they will achieve their objectives.
However, the goalkeeping situation must be of concern to Chelsea. While I admire Carlo Cudicini, he needs more games under his belt. Anyway, he does not have the same presence as Petr Cech and looks vulnerable at crosses, which will be of interest to Emmanuel Adebayor.
In attack, Shaun Wright-Phillips will add thrust down the right wing and the in-form Joe Cole will offer trickery on the opposite flank, where he has performed much better than Florent Malouda, and will be a clear danger to Arsenal.
I imagine the industrious Salomon Kalou will be dropped to allow Didier Drogba to wreak havoc on his own up front, though the team created plenty of chances with the two in tandem at Tottenham.
Elsewhere, the action in the midfield will be fascinating - though, hopefully, not too aggressive. Mathieu Flamini and Cesc Fabregas complement each other perfectly for Arsenal, with Flamini generally sitting back and allowing the young Spaniard to launch his customary sprees forward.
Emmanuel Eboue adds tremendous strength down the Arsenal right wing and will hamper Ashley and Joe Cole, but he lacks that creative spark that, for example, the injured Tomas Rosicky can provide.
Theo Walcott, following his exploits in Milan, could make another important cameo in place of Eboue and should, with Alexander Hleb, share the attacking burden with Fabregas to provide Adebayor with a decent level of service as the game unfolds.
