Sir Alex Ferguson has made an improved player-plus-cash bid for Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick - offering Mikael Silvestre in part exchange. The Manchester United boss has upped the stakes to ?16million for his top transfer target Carrick and has told Spurs that French defender Silvestre and John O'Shea are available. Republic of Ireland international O'Shea is not keen on leaving United but Fergie is hoping Silvestre may tempt the White Hart Lane side into finally accepting an offer for Carrick.

The Sun claims Real Madrid may break off negotiations for Ruud van Nistelrooy, having made their maximum bid for the Dutchman. Various other tabloids claim Bayern Munich are prepared to offer United more than the Spaniards, paving the way for a Bundesliga switch for van Nistelrooy.
United are tipped by the Daily Express to rival Liverpool and Arsenal for the signature of young Spanish star Fran Merida, who plays for Barcelona's U17 side.
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson claims Chelsea's big-name summer signings show their main priority for the coming season lies in winning the Champions League.

Rooney's caps and trophy stolen
Rooney's England caps were among the items stolen
Football memorabilia belonging to England star Wayne Rooney has been stolen in a burglary at his parents' home in Liverpool.
England caps, a World Cup 2006 shirt and his BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Trophy were taken.
Merseyside Police said the items were taken from the house in Sandfield Park, West Derby, on Saturday night.
The public have been asked to contact police if they are offered the items in the pub or over the internet.
The Man Utd forward won the BBC trophy in 2002 while he was still an Everton player.
Among the other items stolen were some jewellery and a shirt from the FA Cup Final.
A police spokeswoman described the stolen items as "very distinctive".

Cristiano Ronaldo has stunned United supporters by announcing that he wishes to leave the club over the summer. The 21-year-old caused controversy following his role in Wayne Rooney's World Cup sending-off, and the winger is favouring a fresh start in Spain.
Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he wishes to leave Old Trafford over the summer and is strongly in favour of a move to a leading Spanish club.
The 21-year-old has been vilified by the English press for his role in Wayne Rooney's World Cup quarter-final sending-off, and it has been suggested that the two players will not be able to work with eachother at United following the controversy that surrounded Rooney's dismissal.
"I should get out of Manchester as the circumstances are not right." said the 21-year-old.
"Nobody stood up for me and my desire is to play in Spain. Will it be Real or Barcelona? I hope it will be one of them."
Ronaldo had been linked with a move to Madrid prior to the quarter-final showdown. The player remains under contract with United until 2010, and the Red Devils are unlikely to part with the want-away attacker for anything less than a substantial fee.
United splashed out over £12million to Sporting Lisbon for the player's services in 2003.
