Van der Sar deal to be extended
Manchester United are set to offer goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar a one-year contract extension.
The 35-year-old Dutch international joined from Fulham at the start of last season and his current deal at old Trafford expires next summer.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We have to pay attention to his age and it depends how he does next season.
"But he was a terrific addition to our squad last season, his form was superb," added Ferguson.
In his first season at Old Trafford Van der Sar proved himself to be United's best keeper since Peter Schmeichel retired in 1999.
Fabien Barthez, Mark Bosnich and Tim Howard are among those who have tried to fill the gap left by the great Dane, but Van der Sar coped easily with the demands of playing for United.
As he looks for a long-term successor for Van der Sar, Ferguson is in the process of trying to sign West Brom's Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, while youngster Ben Foster will spend another season on loan at Watford to gain experience.
Ferguson has also loaned Tim Howard out to Everton for next season after the American suffered a loss of form last term.
The United boss said: "We're trying to consolidate our goalkeeping options and by next season I think we will be in a stronger position than at any time since the Peter Schmeichel era.
"We need experienced cover and the fact that Tomasz has played a full season in the Premiership gives him greater all-round experience at this moment in time." |

Man Utd invite offers for Miller
Manchester United are ready to listen to offers for midfielder Liam Miller.
Miller, 25, has struggled to live up to the reputation he arrived with when he moved to Old Trafford from Celtic in the summer of 2004.
The Republic of Ireland international has made just 22 first-team appearances and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Leeds.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to get a deal sorted out before the transfer window closes in August.
United's expectations of Miller were demonstrated by their pursuit of him, which saw him sign a pre-contract agreement six months before his arrival.
But he seemed overawed by his surroundings and, despite the absence of a large number of senior players, was only a substitute in the opening game of United's South African tour.
Leeds' defeat by Watford in the Championship play-off final at the end of last season effectively scuppered any chance of a permanent move to Elland Road. |

Peace hopeful of keeping Kuszczak
West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has played down Sir Alex Ferguson's claims that keeper Tomasz Kuszczak is on the verge of joining Manchester United.
The 24-year-old Polish international has long been linked with United, and Ferguson had said: "We are in the process of tying up a deal."
But Peace insisted: "We've had talks but absolutely nothing has been agreed.
"We've said throughout the close season that it's our intention to hold on to key members of the first-team squad."
West Brom appeared to pave the way for Kuszczak to join United by signing Switzerland's World Cup goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuhler on Friday.
And with Ferguson allowing reserve keepers Tim Howard and Ben Foster to join Everton and Watford on loan respectively, it appeared certain that Kuszczak would join as United's number two.
Indeed, Ferguson said: "He has Premier League experience and he'll be number two to Van der Sar."
However, following Peace's declaration that it was the club's policy "not to sell key members of the squad", Baggies manager Bryan Robson also hinted that Kuszczak could stay.
He said: "Pascal is a vastly experienced keeper and it is up to him and Tomasz to challenge for the first-team place here." |
