Built like a Fort-e! - Updated
Submitted by salihin on Sat, 05/12/2009 - 8:59pm

The new Kia Forte
as test-driven by Hezeri Samsuri
About eight years ago, one of the national auto players told us that when they designed their cars, their benchmark was Japanese vehicles.
"No point of benchmarking the Korean makes, they are at the same level with us," said the CEO of one of the companies then.
Well, perhaps there was some truth in that bold statement as the popular Korean car then was the Kia Spectra.
The Spectra was really a decent four-door hatchback, with commendable performance to boot.
There is nothing special about the car, and people will laugh if you want to compare the Spectra with a Toyota, Nissan or Honda.
But not this Forte by Naza Kia.
This car will make other players rethink their strategies, or even their existence.
Our colleague believes the Forte should be fighting against the C-segment cars like the Civic or the Altis.
True, in terms of dimension, the Forte is slightly bigger (though it does not look like it as the Forte is tall).

In reality, the writer believes the battle will be more focused in the B-segment, where the mighty Vios and the sporty City dominate.
The reason is its pricing, and Malaysia has always been a price sensitive market.
The Forte 1.6L SX we tested comes with traction control, ABS, EBD, 6-in-dash CD changer, 6-speaker system, 17-inch wheels, keyless entry and start, mono-chromatic rear view mirror, auto headlight, high-pixel display units on the centre console plus the meter console, i-Pod and USB ports as well as an exterior that will make Vios owners run and hide.

Inside, the dashboard looks amazingly attractive, down to the elephant skin imitation surface on the main panel of the dash.
The triple cowlings for the instrument cluster remind us of a Mazda while the leather bound steering wheel is both solid and comfortable to grip.
There is even an Audi/Volkswagen styled volume toggle on the steering wheel.

The gear knob on the hand reminds us of a BMW - it has a smooth metallic insert on the knob, surrounded by Napa leather.
On the road, the Forte's MacPherson struts for the front and torsion beam at the back gave a fairly comfortable ride.
The 17-inch wheels, however, made the ride a bit harsh on rutted surfaces (the lower specced EX comes with more comfortable 15-inch wheels).
We notice that the Forte nose-dived quite a bit, and if one is not careful, the rear can easily step out.
Lifting the right foot in mid-corner, the tail started to wag like a puppy.
Throw in the light steering and even the best driver will not do anything daring on a wet day with the Forte.
Of course, traction control was there to keep things in check but the best is that you keep the steering straight while braking and it should be okay.
Our passengers appeared to like the comfortable seats and its quiet cabin, even at the back.

For fathers and mothers, that 495-litre boot can swallow a lot of things. You can also drop the rear seat down in 40:60 formation by tugging on the knobs found inside the boot.
We just wish the power window button for the driver comes with auto wind for up and down. As it is, the button only has a auto wind down function.
Cruising at 110km/h in top gear, the engine was running at 3,000rpm. Pressing the accelerator harder, the car surged forward in a smooth manner. Even dropping the gear manually to third did not make the engine sound strained.
Our fuel consumption averaged around 8.9 litres/100km, which is not really impressive for a 1.6L car, but bear in mind the car only has 600km on its clock and the engine is still tight. We are sure the figure will improve as the engine starts to wear in.
The Forte is a big improvement from Naza Kia.
Its long list of equipment, solid finishing and handsome looks will definitely make even die-hard fans of Japanese cars to rethink their purchase.
As for us, we think this is the real car for the rakyat.

*I got the car Thursday evening and submitted the story the next day. That Friday night, I drove it around for 4 hours and realised that the rear suspension couldn't be that bad. The next morning, as I've suspected, I found out the tyre pressure was set at 300kPa! Apparently, the guys who drove the car to Penang for the Forte media trip drove the car with show-room tyre pressure.
With proper tyre pressure, the Forte gives a more comfortable ride, even with those low-profile tyres on 17-inch wheels. The rear too is not as "wild" as before and the numb steering can only be felt when you take corners at a fast speed. - Hezeri Samsuri

Nampaknya isu "nose dive" yg dilaporkan dalam CBT tu disebabkan tyre pressure yg setting terlalu tinggi masa test drive...

beli je dulu bro, baru pikir spare parts. bukan hari2 nak tukar parts.
dulu masa mula2 swift kluar, macam2 org cakap pasal spare parts ler... aku redah je beli 1st batch, ni dah dekat 5 tahun... elok je. parts ada je. bila kita dah guna, tau ler mana nak carik.
this is all about business, suppliers are living on customers. so, if there's a demand, there will be the supply....

Crash Test

Slow Mo

Four Stars

Body region scores out of 4 points each: Head/neck 4 pts, chest 3.55 pts, upper legs 0.39 pts, lower legs 1.69 pts.
The passenger compartment held its shape well in the offset crash test. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 124 and upwards 20 mm. The steering wheel hub moved 56 mm rearward, 1 mm upward and 13 mm sideways. The front ("A") pillar moved 42 mm rearwards. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash the driver door could be opened with high manual effort.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. Steering column components were a potential source of injury for the driver's knees. A production change introduced after the crash test has improved knee protection in this area but some concerns remain. The passenger's head was cushioned by the airbag.
